Job description:

A Class A Yard Goat Driver (also known as a Yard Jockey, Hostler, or Spotter) is responsible for the efficient and safe movement and organization of semi-trailers within a truck yard, distribution center, warehouse, or intermodal facility.

This role is distinct from an Over-The-Road (OTR) driver because the driving is confined to private property, though a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is frequently required, especially if the driver occasionally needs to cross public roads or if the combined weight of the yard truck and trailer exceeds a certain threshold.

Job Description

Summary

The Yard Goat Driver is a vital role in logistics operations, responsible for maneuvering trailers to and from loading docks, staging areas, and parking slots to ensure continuous, efficient, and safe flow of product through the facility.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

Trailer Movement & Spotting:

Operate a terminal tractor (Yard Goat/Hostler) to move 53' trailers or containers within the yard, typically between loading docks, staging areas, and designated parking spots.

Back trailers into tight loading docks with precision and accuracy for loading and unloading operations.

Switch out empty trailers with full trailers at dock doors (often referred to as "spotting").

Ensure trailers are correctly positioned and secured before and after loading/unloading.

Equipment Operations & Inspection:

Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the Yard Goat and trailers (checking tires, lights, brakes, fluid levels, etc.) and report any maintenance issues immediately.

Connect and disconnect air lines, safely crank landing gear, and correctly hook up/uncouple trailers from the yard tractor.

Slide tandems on trailers to comply with weight distribution regulations.

Maintain the fuel level and cleanliness of the Yard Goat/Hostler equipment.

Yard Management & Coordination:

Conduct yard checks (physically or digitally) to maintain an accurate inventory of trailer locations and statuses.

Coordinate and communicate via two-way radio or handheld device with dispatchers, warehouse personnel, and dock workers to prioritize trailer movements and manage traffic flow.

Assist with light physical tasks such as opening/closing trailer doors or securing loads when required.

Safety and Compliance:

Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations (if applicable), and OSHA standards.

Maintain a safe and organized work environment in the yard.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Minimum Requirements

License: A Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is highly preferred and often mandatory.

Experience: Proven experience operating a yard spotter, yard mule, terminal tractor, or semi-tractor in a yard/switching environment.

Clean Driving Record: A satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) is required.

Physical: Must be able to pass a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screening.

Education: High school diploma or GED is typically required.

Essential Skills

Maneuvering Expertise: Exceptional backing skills and the ability to maneuver large trailers accurately in confined, busy spaces.

Attention to Detail: Meticulous observation for equipment damage, precise trailer placement, and accurate record-keeping of trailer movements.

Reliability: The ability to work independently, follow instructions, and maintain a consistent, efficient workflow in all weather conditions.

Communication: Effective verbal communication skills to coordinate with various logistics and warehouse staff.

Work Location: In person
