Job Summary
The Hands-On Metal Fabrication Manager will play a pivotal role in leading the day-to-day operations of the metal fabrication department while actively participating in the hands-on production of RV parts and assemblies. This role combines leadership with direct involvement in fabrication activities, ensuring that products are produced efficiently, to specification, and meet high-quality standards. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in metal fabrication processes, team management skills, and a passion for building high-quality RV products.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
Lead by Example: Actively participate in metal fabrication activities (e.g., welding, cutting, bending, assembly) to model best practices for the team.
Supervise & Mentor: Manage a skilled team of fabricators, welders, and machine operators, providing hands-on training, feedback, and support to help them achieve their best performance.
Performance Reviews: Conduct regular performance evaluations, identify training needs, and facilitate skill development and safety training.
Production Management
Oversee Fabrication Operations: Ensure all fabrication processes, including welding, machining, cutting, and finishing, are executed efficiently and meet product specifications.
Set Production Priorities: Manage the fabrication schedule to meet production deadlines while ensuring minimal downtime.
Quality Control: Maintain strict adherence to quality standards, ensuring that all fabricated parts meet design requirements and customer expectations. Conduct regular quality checks and implement corrective actions when necessary.
Hands-On Fabrication
Direct Involvement in Fabrication: Perform hands-on metalworking tasks such as MIG/TIG welding, metal cutting, bending, grinding, and assembly to produce RV parts and components.
Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to guide fabrication activities, ensuring precise execution of designs.
Material Selection: Oversee the selection of materials for each project, ensuring the appropriate metals are used for durability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
Process Improvement & Innovation
Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and refine fabrication processes to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
Equipment Maintenance: Monitor the condition and performance of fabrication equipment (welders, presses, saws, etc.) and ensure it is maintained and calibrated for optimal performance.
Innovation: Stay up to date with the latest metalworking techniques and industry trends, proposing new technologies or processes that could improve operations.
Resource Management
Materials & Inventory: Oversee the inventory of raw materials and fabricated parts, ensuring adequate stock levels and minimizing material waste.
Budget Management: Assist in managing the fabrication department's budget, keeping track of labor costs, material usage, and other operational expenses.
Collaboration & Communication
Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, design, and quality control teams to ensure fabricated parts meet design specifications and functional requirements.
Reporting: Provide regular updates on production progress, quality metrics, and department performance to upper management.
Qualifications
Experience:
5+ years of hands-on experience in metal fabrication, with a proven track record of managing or leading a fabrication team.
Strong expertise in welding (MIG/TIG), machining, metal cutting, bending, and forming processes.
Experience in operating a press brake/Fiberlaser
Experience in RV manufacturing or similar industries (e.g., automotive, aerospace, marine) is a plus.
Previous experience using CAD software for blueprint reading is desirable.
Skills:
Hands-on proficiency with metalworking tools and equipment, including welding machines, grinders, drills, plasma cutters, and CNC machines.
Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse team.
Problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve fabrication issues efficiently.
In-depth knowledge of safety standards and best practices in a metal fabrication environment.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately.
Familiarity with quality control standards and processes.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs. 8+ hours a day
Able to drive a forklift
Comfortable working in a production environment with exposure to heat, noise, and varying temperatures.
Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely with heavy machinery.
Work Environment
The position is based in a manufacturing facility with a high-energy, hands-on environment.
Some overtime may be required to meet production deadlines.
