WHAT WE ARE DOING?
We are testing a new Blood Glucose/Ketone Meter for monitoring diabetes in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics. We are looking for volunteers to come to our test site and test the NEW GLUCOSE/KETONE METER and allow us to test your blood glucose level and ketone level using the NEW Blood Glucose/Ketone Meter.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
When you text us to schedule an appointment we will ask you a few background questions to confirm age and diabetes status and schedule a time for you to come in to participate. When you arrive you will be asked to read and complete an INFORMED CONSENT form telling you what you are agreeing to do, what we will be doing and the expectations of your participation. If you AGREE with what is shown in the Informed Consent and SIGN the form the study will then begin immediately. You will then have to read the user manual and quick start guide for the product on how to use and operate the NEW Blood Glucose/Ketone Meter. (Sorry, the informed consent, user manual, quick start guide is only in English so you MUST be able to read English to participate. Additionally, if you require glasses for reading please bring them with you. We are not able to read the Informed Consent, User Manual or other materials to you, nor can anyone else read the manual to you.
(Warning: This is a product usability study specifically looking at a consumers ability to read the product materials and conduct a home diabetes or ketone test with the product. If we see that you have not read the manual you will be asked to leave and you will not be compensated. The MAIN purpose of the study is to determine if a consumer - like you - can purchase this product at a retail store, take it home and use the product to monitor your diabetes or the diabetes of your child. As such, we are not able to assist you in the study.)
After you have finished reading the user manual and quick start guide you will then perform a Glucose Test and a Ketone Test on one of your fingers using the new meter. This will include you using a lancet to poke your finger. (2 lancet pokes are required.) When you have completed these tests, our medical professional will collect some blood from your finger tip AND then repeat the glucose and ketone tests. (This will be 2-3 additional lancet pokes of your fingers.) The professional will then perform an additional glucose and ketone test on your finger using a product that is already sold in the market. (This will be a separate lancet poke of your finger.) A phlebotomist will then perform a blood draw on you to collect venous blood. (This venous blood draw, along with the blood collected from your finger will be used for comparison of the various test results you and our professional obtained during the testing.) You then will complete a short questionnaire and will then be done.
(Note: You will have to "poke" yourself at least 2 times AND our professional will "poke" you at least 2-3 times. If you are not able to “poke” yourself with the lancet you will not be able to continue and will be asked to leave and will not be compensated.)
(Note: compensation is based on your ability to COMPLETE the study in it's entirety including: testing yourself with the glucose/ketone meter, reading the user manual/quick start guide, allowing us to test you with the new and existing products, allowing us to collect a blood sample from your finger and arm and your completion of the questionnaire at the end of the study. Failure to complete all related activities required means that you will not be compensated because the information or data is incomplete and not usable.)
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
The purpose of this usability study is to test the ability of consumers to perform glucose and ketone tests on themselves using just the materials – i.e. user manual and quick start guide – included at time of purchase. We will compare the results obtained with the NEW glucose/ketone meter from you and from the professional with the results obtained from a laboratory to determine if you the consumer was able to successfully use the product. This new meter is intended to be sold to the general public should it gain FDA approval.
