The Department of Facilities Management is seeking an Extra-Help Museum Curator - I to assist in managing the education programs of the Museums Division. The ideal candidate will have experience working in museum educational programs such as Living History or other hands-on youth learning activities. They will also possess knowledge of museum standards, volunteer management, and historic interpretation. The Museum Curator - I will assist with visitor services and work directly with museum volunteers in providing tours and implementing educational programs.
This position works Thursdays, Saturdays, and alternating Fridays.
We are also seeking a Full Time Curator of Archives to oversee the Archival Management Program for the Placer County Museums Division. They will receive donations and transfers of official and historically significant records, photographs, maps, and other archival materials from various departments within Placer County as well as from public donors and organizations. This position is responsible for processing and preserving the region’s historic archival resources, as well as making them accessible including through public reference services. They will train and oversee the work of student interns and volunteers to assist with processing and cataloging archival records. The Curator of Archives will also serve as a member of the Museums Division Exhibit Team, providing research, interpretation, photographs, and other archival materials for use in exhibitions within the Division’s eight museums.
The ideal candidate will have experience preserving and processing archival collections and be familiar with both physical and digital archival preservation standards and techniques. They will have demonstrated an ability to conduct thorough, rigorous, and historically accurate research. They will also be familiar with volunteer management and must communicate professionally and provide high quality public service.
Both of these positions require the equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with major course work in history, art, anthropology, humanities, or a related field. In addition, the Museum Curator II requires 2 years of experience in archives, education, cultural resources, or performing general museum duties. The Museum Curator I requires no experience.
