The medical assistant (M.A.) at Howe Medical Clinic is an integral member of the medical team. The M.A. is
responsible for presenting themselves and the clinic in a professional, competent and welcoming manner. To
maintain that professional standard, medical assistants are required to wear “scrubs” when seeing patients. The
M.A. will perform a variety of medical/technical support within their scope of practice as defined by the Medical
Board of California. The M.A. assists in the examination and treatment of the patients under the direction of the
supervising physician or designee.
Education: High School Diploma/GED, Completion of a program meeting the requirements of the Medical Board of
California.
Training/Certification: Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited and approved medical assisting program OR
equivalent training. BLS.
Qualifications: Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to read, write and comprehend
medical information as appropriate. Ability to perform medical/technical support within their scope of practice as
defined by the Medical Board of California. Ability and willingness to comply with patient confidentiality laws and
regulations.
Duties:
Provide medical/technical support per physician approved protocol within their scope of practice.
Prepare the patient rooms and the patient for examination by the clinician.
Interview patients to collect pertinent information.
Measure vital signs and other pertinent data such as body composition and measurements.
Document pertinent data in the patient’s medical chart.
Assist the clinician with the care of the patient as appropriate.
Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections as directed by the clinician.
Complete the appropriate forms as required by the clinic/program.
Provide to the patient basic dietary/nutritional education consistent with the program and their training.
Provide to the patient, instruction on pulse monitoring.
Provide to the patient, basic instruction in exercise per program as approved by the clinician.
Additional Duties (as directed):
Attend and participate in staff meetings.
Inventory, order, and stock medical supplies and materials.
Compile, organize and file medical charts and other documents as necessary.
Schedule patient appointments.
Answer the office telephone and respond to patient questions as appropriate.
Fax documents such as requests for medical records, as required by your supervisor.
Perform computer data entry.
