Are you tired of the status quo when it comes to law firm life? Are you tired of billable hours? Do you want to start serving clients and taking legal positions that you can actually believe in?
If you answered yes to each of those questions, then keep reading….
I have been practicing employment law for more than 20 years, in a variety of private-practice contexts, based in Northern California the entire time. For the last 8.5 years, I have operated as a solo, with support staff and occasional co-counsel, representing both individuals and select management entities (small businesses and non-profits) in the context of employment-related matters.
My philosophy on working with both employees and employers is simple: protect the good employers (those who are playing by the rules as they take risks to create important jobs every day), and hold all other employers accountable, all for the purpose of creating sustainable work and workplaces that we all benefit from.
This practice is growing, especially in helping individuals navigate various issues related to disability (reasonable accommodation/interactive dialogue, return to work, severance negotiations, and litigation). I have a steady stream of referrals from various sources, but need help doing the work, especially when it gets to the point of litigation. Offices are in Sacramento (private suite) and San Francisco (co-working space).
I am looking for someone who is:
A CA licensed attorney in good standing with a minimum of 5 (ideally 10+) recent years of employment litigation experience in areas other than wage/hour (ideal disability discrimination and other EEO matters);
A true litigator, and not someone who is just willing to do it (but would rather be doing advice/counsel work);
Willing to work a good amount of the time in the Sacramento office (there is a private office available) so that we can get to know each other; and
Entrepreneurial and willing to take some risks.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity for an individual who is looking for a path to an ownership/equity partnership opportunity. I am not hiring an employee or a “partner” in name only. You will initially be a contractor working on contingency matters, paid on a contingency basis, to see if the fit for true (equity) business partnership is right. If the fit is right for both of us, based on criteria that we establish together and as determined by both of us (individually and together), then you will be a partner with an ownership interest in the practice.
I don’t care about where you went to law school, whether you made the dean’s list, whether you were on law review, whether you have a portable book of business, whether you passed the bar exam on your first try, or any of the other standard benchmarks.
I do care about real-life experience, your ability to help clients facing real-life challenges, your ability to connect with people in meaningful ways, your ability to know and articulate why you are doing what you are doing, and your ability to calmly counsel others in times of their crisis.
I also care about you having enough professional and life experience to know, appreciate, and understand what you are leaving behind in terms of the status quo law practice models, what you are moving toward in the context of this practice, and why.
This is an EEO+ practice committed to working with others based on their needs and abilities, with or without reasonable accommodation.
