St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church (https://stdunstans.org/) in the San Carlos neighborhood of San Diego seeks a part-time Children's Minister to oversee their vibrant and growing children's ministry. The children’s minister works with the staff team to support the faith formation and education of children as followers of Jesus, coordinates the Christian education program (preschool through 5th grade), and supports the church's teachers and volunteers.

Children’s Minister Job Description

The children’s minister:

· supports the faith formation and education of children as followers of Jesus.

· assists in overseeing volunteers, child caregivers (nursery), and with the Rector and Associate for Formation and Pastoral Care, coordinates a comprehensive Christian education program for the children of St. Dunstan’s- preschool through 5th grade

· supports teachers and volunteers and

· acquires materials under the direction of the Associate for Formation and Pastoral Care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Organize and oversee Children’s Sunday School, Children’s Chapel, PrayGround, and children’s activities/programming. Collaborate with other staff, particularly with the youth ministry leadership, to coordinate combined youth and children ministry events.

· Organize and run summer Vacation Bible School in collaboration with the Children and Youth Ministry Collaborative, Rector, and the Associate for Formation and Pastoral Care.

· Work with the Associate for Formation and Pastoral Care to

o select and order curriculum for children’s ministries and other supplies for children’s ministries.

o provide all programming dates for the Parish Calendar annually and update as needed.

o Develop and submit budget requests. Work within the approved annual children’s ministry budget (up to $500 per expense) and submit any requests for additional (and/or restricted) funds to the Rector / Vestry for pre-approval.

· Schedule programs and activities to support the children’s ministries during special occasions and seasons including Advent, Christmas Eve pageant, Shrove Sunday, St. Dunstan’s Day, Ministry Fair, etc.

· Complete required training such as “Safe Church, Safe Community”, first aid, and AED. Provide completion notification or training certificates to the Parish Administrator.

· Coordinate with the Rector to participate in any continuing education opportunities.

· Provide information related to the children’s ministry to the Parish Administrator for publication in parish brochures, E-News, bulletins, signage, social media, and monthly newsletter.

· Attend weekly staff meetings and a yearly staff retreat as required by Rector.

· Welcome newcomers and visitors with children and invite them to participate in children’s ministries. Maintain regular communication with families. Notify the clergy of any pastoral care needs.

· Gather and maintain a database of children / family participants in children’s ministry programs and provide contact information to the Rector, Associate for Formation, and Parish Administrator.

· Coordinate with the Parish Administrator for expenditures with the church credit card. Reimbursements must be submitted in writing for approval with accompanying receipts.

· Perform other related duties as assigned or approved by the Rector or Associate for Formation and Pastoral Care.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise children during children’s ministry events and all teachers and volunteers who support children’s ministry events.

Qualifications

· A Christian committed to Jesus Christ

· A passionate desire to help children discover the love of God and grow in faith

· Respect for the Episcopal Church/Anglican tradition

· A creative and effective teacher of young children, skilled in various modes of learning

Someone who can:

o Build relationships with children and their families

o Demonstrate patience and communication skills

o Maintain healthy boundaries, including the responsible use of technology and social media.

o Work collaboratively as a team member with fellow staff and volunteers

o Be consistent, reliable and responsible

Education and Experience

Undergraduate degree and/or at least two years’ experience, demonstrating an ability to grow and sustain a vibrant children's ministry.

Other Requirements

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of criminal background check. Three references are required, including at least one personal and one professional reference. Upon hiring, must complete Safeguarding God’s Children and Safeguarding God’s People certification process.

Compensation and Benefits

The position is 15 hours/weekly. Pay is $23.00/hour. Vacation and benefits per the St. Dunstan’s Personnel Handbook.
