TRIAL GARDEN ASSISTANT

Work with new plant genetics!

POSITION

The Trial Garden Assistant will be in charge of the plant care for annuals, perennials, shrubs at our Carpinteria trial garden. Hours required, 12‐24 hours per week. Responsible for the continued success of plants on‐site. Monitor individual plants needs for water, fertilizer, and insect pressures. Keep the garden space clean and tidy. Remove weeds and keep containers organized. Pot up plant material as needed. Assistant will take photos of plants once a week to once every other week, to keep track of plant growth throughout the season. Photos will be used in a knowledge base that is shared with plant breeders and the horticultural industry.

Part‐time, on‐site position outdoors at the PlantHaven Carpinteria Trial Garden and at our offices in Santa Barbara. This position is 75% outside, 25% inside an office setting.

Position is currently available and open.

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate based on experience, paid semi‐monthly on or before the 15th and end of the month.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS

Monitor plants individual water needs

Irrigate plants

Fertilize plants once a week

Test water for pH levels and EC levels

Remove weeds from pots and ground

Monitor plant health, report any issues including insect pressure

Take photos of plants, download images to use in presentations

Must have a reliable vehicle

Require travel between trial garden in Carpinteria and office headquarters in Santa Barbara

Be able to lift # 30lbs

Be willing to work in various weather conditions

Be reliable when committing to work schedule, as well as flexible when needed

SKILLS

Horticulture experience beneficial

Experience with photography and photo management helpful

Communicate professionally with team members

Take direction and incorporate feedback into workflow

Be resourceful and find solutions to problems proactively

Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
