Canyon Care Instructor for Aftercare

Work Year:
10 month, part-time position (while school is in session) starting August of 2024.
Schedule:
Shifts are from 2:45/3:00 - 5:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 1:15/1:30 - 5:30pm on Wednesday

Salary Range:
$20-$24 per hour based on experience. Does not include a benefits package.
Nature of Position:
Canyon Care Instructors are responsible for supervising and ensuring the safety of the children in the program, as well as planning and leading after-school enrichment activities and collaborative play opportunities. Canyon Elementary School is a tiny public K-8 school located in a beautiful redwood forest beside a creek, just a 10 minute drive from Moraga / 15 minute drive from Oakland.
The ideal hire must be a consistent, dependable worker with a passion for working with children, who possesses positive communication skills and some combination of these attributes: warm, playful, imaginative, dedicated, creative, approachable, responsible, curious, attentive, patient – and assertive enough to be taken seriously by children. The program content adjusts according to the skills & background of the instructor and might include art projects, woodland/creek adventures, imaginative play, sports & cooperative games, fort-building & faerie houses, or anything you love that engages and holds the interest of schoolkids.
Shifts include:
2:45/3:00pm-5:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 1:15/1:30 - 5:30 Wednesday
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Uses positive behavior management skills & an understanding of the developmental range of elementary school children to establish and maintain a positive, safe, and supportive environment that values community, friendships and learning.
- Collects children at school dismissal and signs them into aftercare. Ensures children are signed in/out by an authorized adult. Communicates professionally with caregivers as needed.
- Prepares and serves simple snacks.
- Plans and implements simple organized activities (craft projects; tabletop & outdoor games, etc). Directs children in age-appropriate extracurricular endeavors and supervises free play.
- Ensures the indoor & outdoor space is cleaned up and organized at the end of every shift, ideally with the help of the children.
- Works cooperatively and collaboratively with other staff members. Performs additional program duties as assigned/needed.
- Maintains transparent communication with the Program Director in regards to any issues that arise with children/families/staff.
- Ensures that all school rules, policies, and guidelines are adhered to, and follows Canyon Care protocols for conflict/behavior.
- Completes simple program documentation and paperwork when necessary.
Qualifications/Experience:
- High school diploma and some experience/competence working with elementary-school-aged children are required.
- Must be a self‐starter and able to perform all job duties (after training) with little or no supervision.
- Excellent organization, time management and follow through; high ethical professional standards; strong sense of commitment and responsibility; ability to arrive on-site before shifts start in order to prepare for student arrival.
- Able to build immediate and caring rapport with children of all ages and backgrounds.
- Must be able to work indoors & outdoors in all types of weather. Must be willing to work & play in a beautiful redwood forest.
