About the Position:

Aspire Education is excited to partner with Girls Inc of Alameda County to provide after school tutoring support at select elementary and middle schools in Oakland this spring. The ideal candidate will be able to begin tutoring the week of April 8th.

Logistics:

The tutoring will take place on select weekdays (2-3 days/week) from approximately 3:30-5:30pm at three sites in Oakland: West Oakland Middle School, Allendale Elementary School, and Burckhalter Elementary School.

Tutors at West Oakland Middle School will support students in 6th-8th grades who attend an after school homework support session, where they work on their homework (primarily math and English) and receive support from our tutors. The tutor will mostly work 1:1 with a student to provide homework support. The tutor should be mindful of the background the students come from and tutor in an engaging way that promotes student motivation. The tutor will collaborate with the team and program staff to provide high quality education for the students.

Tutors at Allendale and Burckhalter Elementary Schools will support students in K-5th grades who attend an after school program in which they receive small group math intervention and support. The tutor will work mostly 1:1 and in small groups with students to provide math tutoring with students who have been identified as benefiting from additional math support. The tutor will collaborate with the team and program staff to provide high quality education for the students.

Job Responsibilities:

-Teach and tutor math and English in small group settings in an engaging and interactive way to promote student participation and acceleration in reading and math.

-Be comfortable teaching multiple grade levels in middle school with varying learning styles.

-Monitor and keep track of student progress.

-Be able to adapt the teaching style as needed given the students' level and progress.

-Communicate with both Aspire staff and school staff regarding student participation, attendance, and progress in reading and math.

Requirements:

-Passion for English and math tutoring.

-Experience tutoring students, with a strong preference for students in elementary and/or middle school

-Experience teaching multiple grade level groups preferred.

-Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a setting that may constantly change.

-Flexibility and initiative.

-Classroom management skills.

-Located in Bay Area, CA with ability to travel to the school site(s) in Oakland, CA.
