SALARY:

Non-Credentialed $39.64hr

Credentialed $44.34hr (Step 1)

WORK SCHEDULE:

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-1pm

3-10 week sessions (Fall/Winter/Spring quarters only)

Basic Function:

Palo Alto Adult School is looking for a skilled lead upholsterer to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate upholstery instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their upholstery project. The lead upholsterer will work alongside teaching assistants and provide guidance to them and the students.

Qualifications:

Education:

● High school diploma or GED

Experience and Training:

● Proven work as an upholsterer for 3+ years

● Knowledge of upholstery tools including sewing equipment

● Detail-oriented

● Basic computer skills

● Candidates need to have a strong work ethic, great teaching skills, integrity, honesty, willingness to collaborate as a team, and be a self-starter

● Must arrive at work on time, be reliable, attentive to detail and follow established processes and procedures at work

● Ability to sit, stand, reach, capable of carrying, lifting, and handling furniture, fabric bolts, materials, packages, etc. up to 45 pounds

Specific duties include:

● Determine amounts and types of covering materials

● Remove old covering, webbing, padding, and/or defective springs from workpieces

● Weave and fasten strips of webbing to the back, sides, and underneath of furniture, using small hand tools and fasteners

● Repair and re-glue furniture joints, frames, legs, arms, etc.

● Re-tie new coil springs on webbing base using the 8-way hand-tie

● Stretch and secure sinuous springs to the furniture frame

● Operate power tools as necessary

● Build furniture internal padding using dacron, cotton batting, edge roll, webbing, burlap, foam, etc.

● Measure, cut, and trim foam with hand tools as well as change foam inserts out of cushions. Stuff cushions with polyester batting and down-fill feathers

● Measure, cut, and prep covering material for the sewing team such as fabric, microfiber, microsuede, linen, cotton, velvet, vinyl, etc.

● Upholster new covering materials that have large fabric pattern repeat which requires symmetrical matching on furniture

● Upholster skirts to furniture

● Create button tufting using needles, thread, and hand tools

● Create diamond tufting using needles, thread, and hand tools

● Create channel backs on furniture

● Attach single welt, double welt, gimp, and decorative nails to covers or furniture frames

● Sew upholstery by hand to seam cushions and join various sections of upholstery materials

Essential Skills Include the Ability to:

● Operate industrial sewing machines

● Operate surging machines

● Sew covering materials of solid color

● Sew covering materials that have a large fabric pattern repeat which requires extensive measurements and symmetrical matching

● Sew furniture skirts

● Sew cushion slipcovers
