ABOUT HOLDEN

Holden High School is a private, non-profit organization with approximately 38 students. Class sizes are 12 or smaller, average size is 7 students. We have a strong academic program with an emphasis on social emotional growth. Classrooms have couches and tables. There are no bells. This is a very fun, very alternative, non-authoritarian environment. Staff dress casually and students call them by their first names. We are located in Orinda and are accessible by BART.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are looking for an art teacher to teach up to 4 small group classes (drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, digital art, 3-D sculpture), starting in late August 2024 through mid-May 2025. The art classes would be held either Tuesday or Friday (or could be split between the two days). Holden teachers enjoy autonomy in curriculum design while working collaboratively with our collectively run administration. Teachers have some flexibility with their schedule. COMPENSATION & HOURS:

Monthly salary of $753.47 is based on a rate of $35 per hour for 6.25 hours per week over 31 weeks (includes 3 structured classes, 1.5 hours of “Art Lab”, 1.5 paid prep hours and 0.25 hours of supervision)

Additional hours may be available for subbing pending candidate’s availability

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Fostering a positive and effective art learning environment for 3 structured fifty-minute small group classes and 1 eighty-minute small group “Art Lab.”

Curriculum design and lesson planning

Meeting with co-director (15 minutes a week) for supervision

Writing evaluations of student performance twice a semester

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Desire to work with teens

Artistic proficiency: ability to share art and knowledge or art

Ability to multi-task efficiently and work collaboratively

Being organized and flexible, including the ability to handle large amounts of diverse types of information, prioritize quickly, and pay strict attention to detail

Ability to keep track of deadlines and schedules without close supervision

Ability to independently interpret and apply procedures and policies

NOTE: All school staff must be fingerprinted, show proof of Tuberculosis clearance, and be vaccinated for COVID-19. We encourage our staff to be up to date on COVID-19 boosters and flu shots.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree (or actively working towards one)

Prior art teaching experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The essential functions of this position include lifting and moving equipment, talking, typing, hearing, and visual acuity including the ability to supervise students. They also include stooping, standing, reaching, walking, lifting, and grasping.
