Type: 12 months + (high chances of FTE conversion after 12 months)
This is 5 days per week onsite work. Candidate should be LOCAL to the bay area. .
Scope of Work
The Senior Engineering Associate will support the ALS-U Injection/Extraction Group in design, documentation, testing, procurement, and installation coordination. The candidate must bring prior hands-on experience—this is not an entry-level training role. Recent graduates will only be considered if they demonstrate direct experience in pulsed power or high-voltage systems.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Engineering Associate will be accountable for a broad range of tasks, including but not limited to:
1. Technical Documentation and Schematic Development
Create, update, and maintain 2D AutoCAD electrical schematic drawings.
Apply redlines, track revisions, and ensure version control.
Produce clear, accurate, and compliant documentation aligned with LBNL standards.
Manage and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs).
2. Installation Planning and Field Coordination
Support installation planning for electrical systems, including racks, cabling, grounding, and interfaces.
Collaborate closely with electricians, Riggers & Installers (R&I), fabricators, vendors, and other trades.
Ensure field activities are executed safely, efficiently, and documented accurately.
3. Testing and Commissioning
Assist in preparing and executing functional and system-level testing of pulsed power supplies and related equipment.
Develop test procedures, perform bench testing, collect and analyze test data.
Support QA activities and commissioning with engineering oversight.
4. Project Coordination and Procurement Support
Track and manage procurement of electrical components and subsystems using eBuy/ePro.
Organize deliveries, maintain procurement timelines, and resolve workflow or logistics issues.
Maintain accurate documentation of orders, inventory counts, and lab readiness.
5. Lab and Workflow Organization
Maintain electronics lab organization, readiness, and compliance.
Keep detailed records of print lists, procurement timelines, inventories, and related documentation.
Support engineers and technicians in preparing lab spaces for fabrication and testing.
6. Cross-Team Communication and Workflow Improvements
Act as a liaison between engineering, operations, trades, and project management teams.
Provide clear communication on technical status, risks, and needs.
Contribute to workflow improvements, documentation processes, and technical knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications (Must-Have Skills):
Design Experience: Proficiency with 2D AutoCAD for electrical schematic development.
Hands-On Skills: Demonstrated experience in bench testing, QA procedures, and system-level testing.
Field Repair & Installation: Proven ability to repair, install, and validate electrical systems in operational environments.
High Voltage / Pulsed Power: Background in high-voltage or pulsed power systems required unless compensated by significant industry experience.
Organizational Ability: Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage documentation, BOMs, procurement records, and lab organization.
Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal skills to coordinate across teams and document technical work.
Safety Readiness: Must meet the minimum background requirement to participate in Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) training.
Deliverables
Accurate, up-to-date AutoCAD drawings and schematic packages.
Procurement tracking logs, BOMs, and inventory records.
Test plans, test data packages, and commissioning support documentation.
Organized and maintained electronics lab space supporting ongoing Injection/Extraction work.
Regular technical updates and documentation supporting ALS-U Injection/Extraction Group milestones.
Prescreen Questions:
AutoCAD Experience
Can you describe your experience creating and updating 2D electrical schematic drawings in AutoCAD? How recently have you used AutoCAD in a professional project?
High Voltage / Pulsed Power Background
What types of high-voltage or pulsed power systems have you worked with directly (e.g., power supplies, magnet systems, pulsed modulators)? What was your specific role?
Hands-On Testing
Can you provide an example of a time you performed bench testing or QA procedures on high-voltage or pulsed power equipment? What testing methods or tools did you use?
System-Level Testing & Commissioning
Have you participated in system-level testing or commissioning of electrical systems? What responsibilities did you carry, and how did you ensure accurate data collection and reporting?
Installation & Field Work
This role requires supporting installation of racks, cabling, and grounding systems. Can you describe your direct experience with field installation or repair of electrical systems?
Procurement & Documentation
What experience do you have managing procurement workflows (e.g., creating BOMs, using eBuy/ePro or similar systems, tracking deliveries)? How do you keep documentation organized and up to date?
Lab Organization & Readiness
Tell me about your experience maintaining an electronics lab or test environment. How do you ensure safety, organization, and readiness for ongoing projects?
Cross-Team Coordination
Give an example of when you coordinated technical work across electricians, riggers, or vendors. How did you manage communication and keep the project on schedule
Safety & QEW Readiness
This role requires meeting the minimum background for Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) training. What safety training or certifications have you completed, and are you prepared to work under QEW protocols?
Contract Commitment
This is a full-time, 12-month contract role requiring immediate contribution. Are you available to commit for the full duration, and do you have any constraints that would limit your availability?
