The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures is currently recruiting for Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector positions at the I, II, or III level. If you are interested in applying to the other levels of this opportunity, you must apply to the separate concurrent recruitments being conducted for those levels. As an Inspector, you will either work in the Agriculture Division or the Weights & Measures Division. We are currently hiring in both divisions.

Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector I is the entry-level, trainee position which learns and conducts inspections in the field and provide outreach and education to businesses, employees, and the public about the programs that we administer.

Level I: Possession of two California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued licenses are required within 24 months of the date of appointment of becoming an Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector I. Possession of a valid driver's license is required per the Minimum Qualifications.

Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector II has a critical role, being responsible for conducting inspections on incoming plant shipments, monitoring insect traps, issuing Restricted Materials Permit, Operator ID, reviewing Notice of Intents (NOIs), issuing violation notices, working closely with senior staff on enforcements and actions, and educating the public. You may also conduct independent device inspections under your Weights and Measures licensure. You will also investigate consumer complaints, collect, and process investigative evidence.

Level II: Requires possession of two California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) licenses, one of which must be Pesticide Regulation, Weight Verification, or Measurement Verification. If assigned to the Weights & Measures Division, possession of a valid Class B California driver's license and Tank Vehicle Endorsement is required within one year of appointment to this class.

Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector III is an experienced field inspector, working independently and responsibilities may include inspecting incoming plant shipments, monitoring insect traps, issuing an Operator ID, inspecting, measuring and weighing equipment, working closely with senior staff on enforcements and actions, and educating the public. You will write penalty letters, create evidence, and write reports.

Level III: If assigned to the Agriculture Division, possession of five California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) licenses, including Pest Prevention & Plant Regulation, Pesticide Regulation, Environmental Monitoring and Investigation, Commodity Regulation, and Integrated Pest Management, is required for this position. If assigned to the Weights & Measures Division, possession of three California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) inspector licenses, including Weight Verification, Measurement Verification, and Transaction and Product Verification, is required and a DMV commercial license (Class A or B) is required within one year of appointment.
