About The Position
As a Bus Service Worker, you will be responsible for performing daily routine servicing of transit buses and transit department vehicles. A Bus Service Worker maintains daily work logs manually or by using the electronic program TrakTik.
A Bus Service Worker cleans, fuels, parks, and performs basic service and maintenance to all assigned vehicles. Duties include maintenance work performed in the field at bus stops and facilities removing litter, graffiti, emptying trash bins and removing weeds and brush.

Safety-Sensitive:
The work performed by the Bus Service Worker is considered safety sensitive by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). Incumbents are subject to the FTA/USDOT Drug and Alcohol Testing regulations. Employees assigned to safety-sensitive classifications must take and pass a pre-employment drug test and are subject to random drug and alcohol testing once employed.

License:
This position performs safety-sensitive duties and incumbents must have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements prior to the end of the probationary period. All training necessary to obtain this license is provided.
Work Hours/Shift Differential:
Work assignments include night and weekend shifts. Work is performed seven (7) days a week, including holidays. Employees shall receive a shift differential equal to 5% of base pay per hour for an entire shift when one or more hours of the work shift are worked and the work occurs between the hours of (4) p.m. and (12) a.m. or between (12) a.m. and (7) a.m. Monday through Friday, or any hours on Saturday or Sunday
Selection Process
The selection process may include a minimum qualifications assessment, an application and supplemental questionnaire review, and department selection interviews. An eligibility list will be created as a result of this recruitment that may be used to fill current and future Regular and Temporary openings as they occur while the list is active.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
Clean buses, including disposing of litter, washing the exterior, using an extension washer and operating a bus wash rack, cleaning the interiors and washing the windows, inside and out
Wash and dust seats, walls, handrails, door wells and passenger areas
Sweep, vacuum, mop and scrape foreign objects off floor
Load, unload and transport cleaning materials
Use an electronic probe to collect data from the fare boxes, lift and remove fare box vault weighing up to 50 pounds for emptying
Drive buses during the course of their maintenance
Fuel buses and operate key guard on fuel island, check fluid levels (oil, power steering, coolant and transmission fluid), add fluids as needed and maintain log of fluid and fuel use of each bus
Maneuver an oil bowser into the garage to be filled with oil and maneuver the full bowser weighing up to 275 pounds back to the work area
Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions; read work orders
Maintain daily work logs
Perform related duties as assigned
Additional Duties:
In addition to the duties listed in the Essential Duties Section, each employee in this classification may perform the following duties.
Help start buses, drive light trucks
Clean and perform minor custodial maintenance at bus shelters including litter pick up, wipe down of all surfaces, pressure wash, repair and/or report vandalism, including graffiti, damage or major maintenance requirements
Any single position may not be assigned all duties listed above, nor do the examples cover all duties which may be assigned.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of: Uses, purposes and safe handling of a variety of general vehicle fluids, cleaning solvents, petroleum products, custodial equipment, and common hand tools; safe work practices, including safety precautions for driving buses, light vehicles and mechanical equipment and appropriate response to petroleum product spills.
Ability to: Operate bus washing apparatus; quickly and accurately check and replenish fluid levels on transit busses; Determine appropriate cleaning methods, read gauges and repeatedly perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions; operate transit vehicles; work in confined spaces; wear protective gear; lift and carry 50 pound fare box, maneuver an oil bowser weighing up to 275 pounds, and drag extended length of hose; perform work involving prolonged periods of standing, stooping, reaching, crawling and climbing; walk and work on slippery surfaces; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; hear and distinguish oral directions while working in noisy conditions; read and understand work orders, fill out work orders and daily logs of work performed; communicate and get along with co-workers.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience- Sufficient experience in custodial, general maintenance or vehicle servicing and/or cleaning to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and ability listed above.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California motor vehicle operator's license. Possession of First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross is desirable.
Additional Information
Work in this classification may involve exposure to variable weather, noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, airborne particles, biohazards, noxious odors, grease, oil, cleaning chemicals, solvents and spills. Assignments may involve climbing, reaching, stooping and walking on slippery surfaces. Work includes regular lifting of fare boxes weighing up to 50 pounds and maneuvering an oil bowser weighing up to 275 pounds over distances of up to 150 yards. Incumbents will be assigned to weekend shifts and evening or night shifts, or may be called out for emergency work.
