We are in need of a certified medical caregiver, RN or LVN for in-home support of our brother with ALS. Please read everything below. If you’d like to apply, please email with the details of your experience and your availability.
We are looking for a full-time caregiver to join our care team and help take care of my partner’s brother, Sage! Sage is 38 years and living with ALS. He was diagnosed when he was 35 and received tracheostomy surgery and a feeding tube (G-tube) placed in June 2023. He is no longer able to verbally communicate but is extremely proficient in communicating with his Tobii eye gaze. He is also paralyzed and needs to be transferred from the bed to his wheelchair using a voyage track lift, which is installed in his bedroom.
Although so much has been taken away from him physically, Sage lives his life with a positive attitude and to the fullest. When the weather is nice, Sage is up for a cruise around Santa Cruz and loves watching the sunset. Using his eye gaze, he enjoys going on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with his friends, surfing the web to stay up to date on his favorite sports teams, contributing to an ALS Facebook group, and giving advice to others with ALS.
We would prefer someone with ALS caregiving experience, but open to those who are willing to learn and adjust to Sage’s changing needs. We are looking for someone with the right skills to take care of his medical needs, but also someone who truly cares about his well-being and goes above and beyond to give him the best care possible.
Note: There is always at least one other person in the household to help with Sage, in addition to the caregiver we are looking to join our team. Additional details are below! IHSS providers welcome!
Hours: 9am - 5pm (M-F) - 40 hours. The posted times are our ideal ask, but we are open to discussing additional start/end times as well as days of the week and total hours needed.
Pay: $25/hr+ depending on experience (higher rates for experience with ALS, tracheostomy, feeding tube, cough assist and nebulizer machines, etc.)
Soft skills: Reliable, dependable, honest, caring, positive attitude, upbeat personality.
Daily tasks required to assist with Sage:
-Showering and assisting with changing clothes
-Administering medication and food through a feeding tube
-Oral and trach suctioning
-Transfers from bed to wheelchair and back
-Light housekeeping (laundry, dishes, changing sheets, emptying garbage, cleaning surfaces)
-Range of motion every 1-2 hours
Daily additional skills preferred:
-Trach cleaning
-Feeding tube/peg site cleaning
-Nebulizing medication
-Cough assist
