Personal Care Assistant

Social Sciences Research Scholar at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics with cerebral palsy seeks a reliable caregiver(s) for personal hygiene needs and activities of daily living. The Research Scholar’s current caregiver of 11 years will be retiring no later than November 22nd, 2024 and the scholar is looking for someone to continue their tremendous legacy of exceptional care and loyalty.

Potential candidates must demonstrate an ability to help the scholar transfer from a wheelchair to a toilet seat as well as assist the scholar with other toileting needs. They must be able to do a full transfer of someone who weighs approximately 270 lbs. Ideal candidates should be able to complete transfers from bed to wheelchair, wheelchair to toilet, etc, without the assistance of a Hoyer lift. They must be able to independently provide near total assistance to the scholar with dressing and undressing as well as any other activities of daily living with which the scholar requests assistance.

In addition to these basic job qualifications, potential candidates must possess the following qualities/attributes:

Comfort providing personal care services in both a private residence and professional setting, e.g. the Research Scholar’s office in Palo Alto.

Willingness to travel with the scholar as needed from his residence in San Francisco to the Stanford School of Medicine campus in Palo Alto via CalTrain.

Willingness to travel with the scholar and his partner on business trips and vacations. Successful candidates must be able to travel domestically and internationally.

Willingness to work as needed on weekends and holidays in collaboration with other potential caregivers. The scholar and his partner travel with family over Thanksgiving and the winter holidays and the scholar needs someone able to accompany them on these trips.

Sensitivity to the needs of a hard-working professional with a significant developmental disability.

Ability to follow the exact directions of the scholar and his partner in a respectful and detailed manner.

Acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities.

The scholar and his partner live in the Mission Rock neighborhood of San Francisco. Ideal candidates will be able to easily get to Mission Rock for shifts. This position comes with many responsibilities but also a lot of downtime while the scholar is working and/or socializing. Successful candidates will be those who are content to keep themselves occupied during those downtimes.

The hourly rate for this position is $35/hr. From 9am-5pm Monday through Friday, the successful candidate’s services will be paid for by the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics. The scholar has received a 5 year commitment from Stanford for funding this position.

In addition to the hours provided by Stanford, the scholar and his family plan to pay for at least 4 additional hours Monday through Friday for early morning and after work day assistance. Finally, weekend shifts are generally 8-10 hours a day with a typical start time of 9am. For those who commute to Mission Rock via CalTrain or MUNI, reimbursement will be provided for Clipper Card expenses. For those who commute by car, parking will be provided. Any Clipper Card expenses incurred as a result of commuting from San Francisco to Palo Alto will also be paid for.

Given the number of hours required per week, multiple candidates are needed. However, the scholar is prioritizing the hiring of one candidate for the Monday-Friday shifts. Successful candidates must be eligible to work in the United States and have a valid passport for international travel.
