Core Responsibilities
Clinical Care: Perform thorough dental cleanings (prophylaxis), including removing plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth and beneath gum margins.
Patient Screening: Conduct oral health assessments and screenings for gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer.
Radiography: Take and develop digital dental X-rays and other intraoral images to assist in diagnosis.
Preventative Treatments: Apply sealants and fluoride to protect teeth from decay.
Education: Instruct patients on proper brushing, flossing, and nutritional habits for long-term oral health.
Documentation: Maintain accurate patient medical histories, dental charts, and treatment notes in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Sterilization: Ensure all dental instruments and equipment are properly sharpened, sterilized, and maintained according to safety standards.
Required Qualifications
Education: An Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program is minimum, though a Bachelor's degree is preferred.
Licensing: Active state license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH).
Certifications: Current CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Some states also require a valid X-ray certificate.
Specialized Skills: Proficiency in administering local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (where state law permits).
Essential Skills
Dexterity: Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise instrument use.
Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to explain complex health information and comfort anxious patients.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with dental software like Eaglesoft.
Physical Stamina: Ability to stand or sit for long periods and perform repetitive manual tasks.
Typical Work Schedule & Pay
Schedule: Full time (Monday through Thursday) or Part time (flexible)
Pay: Competitive hourly rates often range from $60 to $80, depending on experience.
