SUMMARY
The Diesel Mechanic position is responsible for all in-house maintenance and repairs for the transportation department. This person will partner with the transportation manager to build the diesel mechanic department, including inventory management and building out the tools storage area.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures proper and accurate documentation of all maintenance performed
Complete work order reports in writing and electronically
Perform preventative and routine maintenance on tractors, trailers, and other equipment
Perform basic diagnostics to identify the source of trouble and make adjustments for safe and efficient operation
Ensuring the company has the safest trucks placed in service and are free of mechanical defects
Changing tires on trucks and support vehicles
Enter daily repairs and services into the computer-based fleet tracking system
Test drive vehicles to verify repairs and vehicle performance
Daily visual vehicle inspections
Perform 90-day BIT inspections for DOT
Build and manage parts inventory using company software
Ensure the cleanliness of the shop
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers
Provide excellent customer service
Punctuality and reliable attendance
Wear proper safety equipment at all times
Escalate issues to leadership when necessary
HVAC Responsibilities:
Service, repair, install, and maintain existing HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including split-system/package units, air handlers, condensing units, heat exchangers, heaters, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, VAV boxes, exhaust hoods and fans, and evaporator coolers
Perform routine maintenance on HVAC equipment, including greasing bearings, cleaning out condensation lines, cleaning coils, vacuuming return grills and ducts, and checking belt tension and pulleys
Adhere to a preventative maintenance routine
Maintain records and process necessary forms
Inform personnel regarding procedures and status of work orders
Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as assigned
Maintain inventory, ensuring the availability of items required to complete installations and repairs
Perform other duties as directed, developed, or assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of work experience as a mechanic, repairing trucks, automobiles, or diesel, or a combination of education and practical knowledge is required
A high school or GED diploma is required
Basic knowledge of gas and diesel engines is required
Proficient with working on Cummings and Detroit engines is required
Certified and licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is preferred
Completed a formal auto/diesel engine training program (e.g., training presented by a community college trade/vocational school or military) is preferred
Experience welding or a welding certificate (professional, personal, and volunteer experience) is preferred
Background in an environment that requires wearing personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection is required
Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment (professional, personal, and volunteer experience) is required
Knowledge of using and operating testing equipment, gauges, and tools associated with vehicle troubleshooting and repairs is required
Basic computer skills, including maintenance programs and diagnostic systems required
Familiarity with precision measurement instruments, oxygen/acetylene equipment, and lifting devices (bottle, floor, wheel, transmission jacks, floor cranes, etc.) is preferred
Able to frequently lift components weighing over 50 pounds with appropriate equipment and assistance from another person is required
Ability to safely operate vehicles equipped with manual and automatic transmission is required
Ability to enter and exit the driver’s compartment of the truck and behind the cab using normally available foot and handholds is required
Paint and bodywork experience is preferred
Language Skills
Excellent Communication skills, including reading, writing, and verbal
Bilingual (Spanish) is a big plus
Technical Skills
Strong ability to ensure road and equipment safety
Perform CHP and DOT inspections and documentation
Ability to partner with Drivers, Operations, Mechanics, Dealerships, etc
Reasoning Ability
Ability to think independently to solve practical problems and deal with situations without guidelines. Ability to interpret various written, oral, report, or schedule instructions.
Ability to use a computer-based maintenance system to log services and repairs
Equipment
Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, forklift, stand-up pallet jack, electric pallet jack, computer, calculator, copier, and phone. Tractors, Trailer, Box Trucks, Air Jacks, Jack stands
