Animal Care Specialist Lead

Do you love animals and have experience working with animals in a veterinarian clinic and/or at shelters? As our Animal Care Specialist Lead, you will be responsible for providing high quality, medical and humane animal care for the shelter residents. You will assist the DVM with our animal patients with exams, perform diagnostics, and treatments.

Responsibilities:

Veterinarian Support:

Assists Veterinarians; maintains accurate and up-to-date records; helps maintain the controlled drug log

Administers oral and injectable medications, subcutaneous fluids, vaccinations, and microchips; knows the pharmaceuticals that are prescribed by the Veterinarian

Monitors the health, safety, behavior, and appearance of the animals; reports observations that require medical care or other attention and end of life care

Acts as the point of contact for communications with partnering veterinary clinics

Reads animal body language and acts accordingly towards fearful or aggressive animals

Shelter Coordination and Safety:

Assists the Shelter Director in managing intakes; maintains files and records

Trains new staff and volunteers; provides ongoing training and mentoring of staff and volunteers

Cleans and disinfects animal areas for a safe and sanitary environment

Oversees Animal Care Specialists

Complies with high standard of safety practices and regulatory laws

Provides courteous, prompt, and responsive service to visitors, volunteers and the public

Qualifications:

Registered Veterinary Technician License, a plus

Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a veterinary practice or shelter medicine

Minimum of 2 years' management experience, preferably a not-for-profit or an animal welfare organization

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Represents the organization in all interactions with the public and stakeholders; good customer service skills

Ability for accuracy, thoroughness, and neatness in work product

Ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment and to changing deadlines and priorities

Capable of working independently and as a member and leader of a team

Good oral and written communication skills

Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays

Must be able to lift, move, and carry objects and animals up to 30 pounds; use of arms above the shoulder is sometimes required
