Nearby (Oakland or close) office assistant to help expand and revamp parts of my book company, est 1981. Two shifts five hours each. More hours available. Starting $25-$35, 30% automatic raise at three months plus profit sharing.

Immediate goals:

Take approximately 300 book descriptions now in Word and plug them in to the matrix of abebooks.com while we expand and polish the catalog/internet business (and possibly sell it). This will take about 30 to 40 hours. Make sure you look at how you will upload books there.

Document, research, appraise & prepare for sale approximately 400 steel/copper plate engravings; old book illustrations; original hippie/ counterculture/ punk images; art of the insane; children's art; occult, esoteric & symbolic iconography; historic photographs; appraise c. objets d'art many from Japan, Norway, Mexico & India. Editing and publishing the backlog of manuscripts here.

In service of the goals here you will:

Keep shelved books coded to each catalog; receive online and catalog orders; simple WordPress and Tumblr adjustments and revisions; keep the mailing list up-to-date; record customer's requests and their collecting interests; slowly assess and condense c.4000 Word documents and 10,000+ book images. It's very low tech here. For example, my calendar is made of paper.

Everyday is different, this is typical office stuff to take care of: figure out why the printer suddenly stopped working. Find the cheapest express shipping rates between DHL UPS and FedEx for each disparate, individual order. Why is GoDaddy charging me so much. Network a new another mac machine (later), take some orders to the post office and pick up a pizza on the way back. Bill paying.

Must be dog friendly as I regularly board & train dogs here. Mac proficient. Able to lift 30-40lbs boxes of books (occasionally) and tall stacks of books (frequently).

Hopefully sometime next year you can help prepare an appraisal of a million dollar library devoted to the history of education and of pedagogy, of parenting and of childhood, contrasted with the history of alternative, especially progressive and singular schools 1880 to 2000, approximately 4500 volumes, from 1584 to 2000.

Home office two blocks to the lake, your room has three windows overlooking the back garden, very quiet. 13,000 old, unusual, antiquarian and rare books shelved here and 25,000 in storage, focused mainly on esoteric spirituality; hermetic philosophy; ancient history; psychology; pedagogy; and various rejected paradigms.

You'll occasionally help out with Pratum Literacy Services, est.2003, building small free libraries and distributing tens of thousands of new books to Oakland's c. 4000 homeless kids living in shelters and group homes
