Position: Energy and Sustainability Coordinator
Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000/Year DOE

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Energy and Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing programs, policies, and initiatives aimed at reducing utility consumption, enhancing energy efficiency, and integrating sustainable practices across the organization's multifamily property portfolio. This role combines technical expertise, regulatory compliance, and project management to achieve cost savings and environmental sustainability goals.
SUPERVISION REQUIRED: Receives directions from the Senior Facilities Manager and may receive directions from the Director of Asset Management. The Energy and Sustainability Coordinator may provide supervision to other lower- level Operations staff, as necessary.
PREREQUISITES:
- Expertise in energy management and sustainability practices within multifamily apartment buildings
- Experience with California AB 802 requirements, San Jose Building Performance Ordinance and/or other utility or environmental reporting compliance standards.
- Strong understanding of building systems, including electrical, HVAC, lighting, and plumbing.
- Experience managing energy efficiency projects and renewable energy installations such as LED lighting retrofits and Solar PV.
- Familiarity with State, County, City or Utility Provider incentive programs to help offset project costs.
- Proficiency in data analysis using Excel and utility benchmarking tools.
- Excellent communication and project management skills to collaborate across departments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in one of the relevant fields:
Environmental, Sustainability, Energy Management, Environmental or Civil Engineering, Facilities Management, Business Administration
- Good oral and written Communication skills
- Proficient knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Office 365
RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are normal for this position, but this list is not to be deemed all-encompassing. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Conduct energy audits or analyze existing data for properties to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption.
- Develop and implement energy efficiency programs, such as: LED lighting retrofits, smart thermostat installations, energy efficient appliances, and plumbing fixture replacements.
- Collaborate with the Senior Facilities Manager and Asset Management team to monitor utility bills (electricity, water, gas) and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Coordinate with maintenance team and / or third parties to ensure energy-efficient equipment is installed and properly maintained.
- Negotiate energy procurement contracts with suppliers to secure favorable rates and terms.
- Create forecasts for energy usage and costs to support budget planning.
- Evaluate opportunities for renewable energy installations, such as solar PV panels and solar thermal systems.
- Coordinate with external consultants and contractors to install and maintain renewable energy systems.
- Introduce and re-enforce recycling and composting programs across properties.
- Partner with Operations to develop policies encouraging sustainable practices among residents, such as green living guides or incentives for reduced energy usage.
- Ensure properties meet local, state, and federal utility and environmental regulations, such as energy benchmarking and reporting requirements.
- Monitor 3rd party vendors, ensuring preparation and submission of required compliance reports to government agencies.
- Stay updated on relevant environmental and energy policies, rebates, and incentives, and ensure the company takes advantage of applicable programs.
- Develop training programs for staff to promote energy-conscious behavior and ensure proper operation of energy-efficient systems.
- Collect and analyze data in collaboration with the Asset Management team on energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and water usage across the portfolio.
- Partner with Senior Facilities Manager to prepare regular reports for senior leadership, highlighting progress toward sustainability goals and cost savings achieved.
- Use existing dashboards and tools to visualize energy performance and track the impact of implemented initiatives.
