SUMMARY: The Bookstore Assistant Manager is able to perform all essential bookseller duties and assists the Bookstore Manager in planning, directing and managing the staff and operations of the store. In the absence of the Store Manager, this role covers all duties of the Store Manager and is able to make critical decisions to ensure the wellbeing of the Store. s.

ESSENTIAL ASSISTANT MANAGER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistant Managerial Duties:

Receives direction from Manager and supports Manager's decisions as communicated to the staff

Independently makes decisions with sole discretion when in the role of Manager on Duty, i.e., when the Store Manager is absent.

Primary responsible person when Store Manager is not available

Is trained in and assists Store Manager in essential Manager duties upon request or in Managers' Absence—i.e. scheduling, payroll, handles customer service complaints, staff issues, etc.

Consistently role models exceptional work habits/customer service for staff

Has authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees.

Directs, leads, manages, responds to staff, addresses grievances.

Performs other duties as assigned including being a leader in returns and cycle count projects

Count Drawers, Do Daily Deposit, and Make Bank Run

Act in concert with Manager during hiring including interviews, onboarding and training

Act in concert with Manager during progressive discipline proceedings, including observation, conversations, written documentation and all parts of the process, up to and including termination. This also includes handling confidential employee records

Assistant Managers must show a high level of professionalism in all situations during work hours

Independently leads store projects including returns, cycle counts and other ongoing projects

Follow Copperfield’s policies, be familiar with the store job descriptions, and the current/most recent Employee Handbook and use them as a resource for understanding performance expectations for all members of the team and for providing feedback for expectations.

Understands the relationship with the IWW and adheres to any union contract.

TRAINING & PERFORMING BOOKSELLER DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Must be an expert in these areas when fully trained and must be able to train others in all of the following):

Customer Service & Presentation

Acknowledge arriving and departing customers. Ability to watch the flow of customers and be accessible shoppers

Fully able to engage and answer customer's queries and requests

Ability to be resourceful and think creatively when assisting a customer with a book search

Offer and competently take a customer order

Ability to understand and utilize discount cards

Offer and sell gift cards

Understand customer shipping procedure

Provide excellent customer service to other Copperfield's employees and follow through on all requests

Cashiering/Handling Media

Greet and query customers at register

Handle and ring merchandise appropriately, accurately

Understand and tender all types of payments correctly

Handle money, receipts correctly. Verbalizes transactions

Consistently offers discount card

Understand Void/Refund/Credit procedure/policy

Store Stocking/Merchandising

Demonstrate pride and ownership of store by maintaining cleanliness, organization and attractiveness of store's interior and exterior

Be familiar with store layout, sections and shelving organization.

Ability to assist with pulling/counts of sections.

Shelve accurately while visually merchandising.

Miscellaneous

Fully understand how to read a display screen in Basil

Can use Canva for designs

Familiar with Ingram Ipage

Use telephones/intercoms appropriately, correctly

Prioritize duties appropriately

Maintains neat and organized work space while performing duties

Able to multitask competently

Familiar with new release and other specifically merchandised areas

Maintain reliability in attendance

Knows return/refund/exchange policy and procedure

Be attentive to floor activity/loss prevention policy and practice

Follow employee handbook and use handbook and Job Description as a resource for understanding performance expectations

Follow & lead staff in health and safety guidelines

Other duties may be assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Experience managing a staff and retail business

Ability to be resourceful and creative in problem-solving

Comfortable with operating a computer

Communication skills necessary to manage a diverse workforce and to assist customers

Dress and grooming appropriate for working with the public

Experience running events

Able to appropriately represent the store in communication with authors, speakers, their guests and representatives and the public at large.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Two years experience in bookstore retail, including one year with specialty experience. One year experience in organizing, facilitating, or otherwise managing events.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Strong command of the English language
