Job Title: Grocery Clerk/Cashier

Reports to: Store Manager

Oceana Market is a full service grocery store. We are a family of wellness-centered and wellness-inspired individuals who join together to collaborate, learn and achieve results within a team environment.

Summary:

The Grocery Clerk/Cashier role is a combo role at Oceana Market due to the small-scale nature of the business. Someone in this role is responsible for the accurate checkout of our customers and willing to help stock and tidy up the store whenever needed. Main cashier responsibilities revolve around our focus on customer service. Outside of physically ringing up customers we expect employees to be friendly and help customers as best as possible. When there are few customers to checkout we expect our team to help tidy up and straighten up the grocery department. Sometimes this may involve stocking shelves and rotating products for freshness. This person must be customer service oriented to ensure that all customers have a great experience in the store. This person may be responsible for other tasks at times as directed by the store manager or Manager on Duty.

Essential Job Functions:

Accurately ringing up customers products during checkout with a focus on correct scanning and weighing items.

Ability to count and handle cash.

Follows all front end procedures as directed by the Manager on Duty and Store Manager.

Understands or is willing to learn the produce codes and accurately weighs products for purchase.

Bags customers groceries in an organized manner to avoid damage to items and mixing of chemicals/non-foods with food items.

Helps maintain clean and organized work areas: duties including dusting, sweeping, mopping, trash removal, and cardboard recycling. cleaning procedures include spraying and sanitizing of countertops, frequently touched surfaces, and items around the front is a must.

Stocking, facing, and rotating old and new merchandise.

Ensuring product remains clean, appropriately merchandised on the shelf, and organized in the warehouse.

Maintaining an active presence on the sales floor at all times to assist customers, encourage sales, and discourage potential theft.

Assisting customers in a courteous manner by answering and/or appropriately directing questions, offering product guidance, taking special orders, and aiding physically-challenged patrons

Maintaining correct operating and product handling procedures, including: receiving deliveries; slacking out, labeling, and dating new product; removing expired and damaged product from stock

Other Functions:

Performs other duties assigned at any time by the Manager on Duty or the Store Manager.

Job Skills and Requirements:

Prior experience is preferred but not required.

Commitment to customer service

Must be able to follow directions, perform physical labor, and maintain a positive attitude

Working familiarity and commitment to continued education in the natural foods industry

Ability to prioritize and multitask

Ability to work independently yet have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other team members and management

Ability to perform simple math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

Physical/Environmental Factors:

Ability to safely handle cases, containers, and bags up to 50 lbs in weight

Ability to stand for up to eight hours

Ability to work in cold storage for extended periods of time

Job involves repetitive tasks and exposure to food ingredients and cleaning agents

Stooping and bending

Ability to operate all necessary equipment

Completing repetitive tasks
