Purpose:
The Sound Technician is responsible for creating the best possible atmosphere for
worship through sound reinforcement. This includes but is not limited to, creating
outstanding sound reinforcement and live stream mixes, supporting the audio needs of
the church congregation, and overseeing all audio equipment and systems.
Equipment in Trinity's sanctuary includes a Yamaha QL5 digital mixing console, Yamaha Rio
3224 Dante stage box, Yamaha CHR12M stage monitors, QSC mains loudspeakers and
amplifiers, high-quality microphones and D.I.s, Sennheiser Evolution wireless systems,
and a T-coil hearing loop. Each week’s service is live-streamed, which requires
coordination between technicians in each area (Audio, video, graphics, social media).
Trinity’s sanctuary is known on the peninsula for its excellent acoustics and Schantz pipe
organ.
General Qualifications & Skills:
Completion of a training or vocational program in sound technology desired
Experience mixing high-quality audio for live events
Technical equipment management, maintenance and troubleshooting
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team setting
Excellent communication, reliability, and organizational skills
Ability to remain focused and attentive for long periods
Proactive, solution-oriented, adaptable, and able to remain positive and effective
in fluid situations
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Create mixes for sound reinforcement and live-stream
Verify sound system equipment is in proper working condition, including
speakers, microphones, hearing loop, batteries, etc. before rehearsal or service
Lead sound checks with pastors, musicians, singers, liturgists, and others
involved in worship
Mentor volunteer youth and adult sound tech assistants as needed
Store and secure equipment after use; lock tech loft doors and ensure outer
doors are locked when leaving
Manage all aspects of the sound system, including troubleshooting, repairing or
replacing equipment as needed
Improve the sound system on an ongoing basis by planning equipment
purchases with the Director of Music and Worship
Maintain an organized, tidy, and useable tech loft area
To succeed, the Sound Technician must:
Read and understand service details as needed before Sunday, communicate
with the Director of Music and Worship for clarification if needed
Arrive on campus well in advance of scheduled music rehearsal or service
Remain focused on the service, to manage transitions and audio cues, ensuring
smooth service flow
Work collaboratively with live stream and Media volunteers to provide a quality
experience for remote attendees
Communicate vacation requests in advance and assist with finding coverage
A desire to serve and care for people expressed through a positive disposition,
production acumen, and excellent audio!
Other Requirements:
Restrict cell phone use for worship-related communications and emergencies only
during worship services.
Keep talking and other noises to a minimum during worship services.
Clean sound equipment periodically, utilizing best practices.
Store sound equipment that is not in use in the equipment storage area
Ability to lift 25 pounds or more
Reporting Relationship:
The Sound Technician reports directly to the Director of Music and Worship or designee.
Time Required:
General hours are Sunday mornings 7:30-12:30 for worship service. Music rehearsals,
weddings (2-3/year), and memorial services (4-6/year) will be scheduled on occasion in
consultation with the Sound Technician.
Compensation:
This position is a non-exempt hourly position. Hourly rate is dependent on skill and
experience. The rate is up to $35 per hour.
