Under supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs preventive maintenance, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs District buildings, facilities, fixtures, equipment, and property.

This position performs skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and repair of District property and facilities. Using specialized knowledge and expertise in HVAC, carpentry, painting, landscaping, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems maintenance and repair, performs a variety of maintenance work to repair, and remodel, facilities, electrical and mechanical systems, equipment, and fixtures; including, but not limited to, the Operations Maintenance Facility, District offices, passenger stations, park and ride lots, landscaping, fences and other trackside areas. This position will be responsible for work activities on various shifts, weekends, and holidays to ensure safe and efficient transportation to the public.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Performs maintenance of trackside structures, including cleaning walls, windows, floors and restrooms.
Performs semi-skilled repairs of structures, fencing and guardrails.
Installs, maintains, repairs and modifies a wide variety of heating and refrigeration equipment; maintains and adjusts associated electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic control systems.
Inspects equipment for maintenance needs, makes basic repairs to ensure safety, and places barricades or signs to ensure patron safety.
Uses diagnostic test equipment and precision measuring devices in the course of work.
Reads and interprets diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals and schematics and works orders.
Measures, tests and inspects completed work to confirm adherence to specifications.
Inspects and reports problems with District facilities and equipment.
Keeps park and ride lots and other trackside areas clean and free of litter.
Maintains trackside landscaping using various power and hand tools; applies fertilizers or herbicides as needed.
Performs manual labor.
Operates, services and maintains gardening, janitorial and related tools and equipment.
Operates a computer for related data input and retrieval.
Safely operates SMART motor vehicles, in the course of performing assigned duties.
References parts catalogues and other sources to determine correct parts for specific applications.
Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion.
Follows proper safety procedures; answers patron questions regarding work activity.
Safely operates equipment; may operate forklift, cranes and other equipment as required.
Requests supplies through supervisor or from stock.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must possess a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.
Minimum three years full time equivalent journey level facility maintenance experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of varied industrial and mechanical systems and equipment, such as heating, lighting, air conditioning and ventilation or skilled construction work; OR two years of related journey level work experience plus successful completion of a post-secondary Mechanical-Electrical Technology Certification Program.
Other Qualifications:
Possession of a valid California’s drivers’ license (or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment).
Satisfactory driving record:
o No more than two moving violations and/or “at fault” accidents within the last 3 years;
o No “at fault” in a fatal accident within the past 5 years;
o No leaving the scene of an accident within the past 3 years;
o No DUI’s or Reckless Driving codes within the last 7 years on the current DMV printout.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment medical exam, including a urinalysis drug test.
Skill in:
Interpreting and applying oral and written instructions in a consistent manner.
Basic computer usage including Microsoft Outlook.
Utilizing a computer-based maintenance management system.
Diagnosing operational problems in heavy industrial, mechanical, electro/mechanical and HVAC equipment and systems and determining parts and labor needed for repair.
Performing preventative maintenance on mechanical systems and equipment.
Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, manuals and work orders.
Knowledge of:
Basic plumbing, carpentry and truck operation.
Basic grounds keeping, such as planting, watering, mowing, spraying, fertilizing.
Construction methods used in passenger facility construction.
Journey level trades (electrical, HVAC, concrete, carpentry, etc).
Trouble shooting and diagnostic techniques.
Basic electrical and electronic principles.
Use and care of power and hand tools of the trade.
Use and operation of measuring and testing devices.
Safe working practices, including techniques for safely lifting and moving heavy objects.
Current building and fire codes and industry standards, including ADA.
Shop arithmetic as required for the mechanical trade.
OSHA and DOT Safety regulations.
General first aid and shop safety practices.
