Job description

Job Summary: The Mechanical Design Engineer will work alongside our dynamic bulk solids engineering team to design custom mechanical equipment for bulk solids handling applications. Our San Luis Obispo employees work in a one-of-a-kind facility with lab space and on-site fabrication facilities for building prototype and commercial equipment. Our end goal is to ensure our clients’ needs are satisfied and that they are thrilled with the results.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Design custom mechanical equipment for industrial applications in diverse industries ranging from pharmaceutical to mining.

Work as part of a team with bulk solids consultants and structural engineers.

Work with vendors and fabrication shops to follow designs from CAD to finished equipment.

Use SolidWorks and AutoCAD to produce 3D models and 2D drawings to shop fabrication level.

Design and specification of drivetrain components.

Engineering analysis of mechanical and machine design.

Take on other duties as directed.

Required Skills & Abilities:

Excellent written and verbal, communication, and documentation skills.

Ability to work independently towards the timely completion of work.

Learn, apply, and retain bulk solids handling knowledge and practices.

Excellent mechanical design and problem-solving skills.

Understand manufacturing processes to produce "constructable" designs.

Experience with design of machine parts and welded steel fabrications.

Experience with rapid prototype manufacturing.

Ability to communicate with vendors and shop floor workers to solve problems.

Prepare design presentations for customers.

Electromechanical design experience. (preferred)

Understanding of industrial controls. (preferred)

Experience with bulk solids handling equipment. (preferred)

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from accredited program.

Minimum of 8 years of experience.

Other Requirements:

Days of work are Monday through Friday. Hours of work are typically between 8:30 a – 5 p, or as approved by supervisor. This position periodically requires additional hours beyond a 40-hour work week.

Occasional travel (8-10x per year) visiting other offices (US and abroad).
