The San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) Rideshare Division is seeking an Intern who has an interest in transportation planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and working with the public, particularly K-12th grade students and families. Interns can apply their education, skills, and experience while gaining practical knowledge in a public agency setting, as well as being part of a creative team responsible for planning events like Bike to School Day throughout San Luis Obispo County. As the Rideshare Intern, you’ll assist with gathering public input on travel patterns and behaviors, mapping and analyzing geographical data, and public outreach.
This internship is ideal for university students expected to graduate in June 2026 with a degree in city and regional planning, environmental studies, public health, or a related field. Candidates with knowledge and/or experience in GIS are strongly encouraged to apply.
TYPICAL TASKS
1. Assists with creation and distribution of the Safe Routes to School Family Survey.
2. Gathers input on transportation plans and programs.
3. Organizes and analyzes geographical data.
4. Assists with planning and execution of public outreach events.
5. Provides staffing support for events on behalf of SLOCOG and the Rideshare Division by speaking and interacting directly with the public, including but not limited to parents, K-12 students, and senior citizens.
6. Creates content for social media, newsletters, and other marketing materials.
7. Ensures that all public outreach materials adhere to SLOCOG’s brand guidelines.
8. Provides administrative support to other team members such as organizing materials and maintaining equipment, scheduling events, attending meetings, and other tasks as assigned.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
To be considered, internship candidates should possess the following: an interest in transportation planning and alternative modes, enthusiasm for working and interacting with the public, excellent writing and communication skills, strong attention to detail, organizational skills, reliability, flexibility, creativity, and experience with Microsoft Office programs. Experience with ArcPro and ArcGIS Online is highly desired. Experience with graphic design software (i.e. Canva) and/or skills in social media are also a plus.
Additionally, candidates should have the ability to: respond quickly and effectively to unexpected situations or challenges, take direction and initiative, work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision, work with diverse populations, maintain confidentiality, learn new software, lift 30-pound items to a height of 3-4 feet, and travel throughout the SLO County region.
TIME COMMITMENT
We request that interns be available from January-June 2026, approximately 10-20 hours per week. Our working hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. These hours are flexible to accommodate your class schedule. You may occasionally be asked to work outside of these times (including weekends) to staff community-based events.
