University Instructors is recruiting for immediate placement for dynamic special education classroom assistants to support our local partner district. As an assistant or paraprofessional, you will directly impact students in special education programs. You will also partner with teachers to provide instruction, behavior management, and primary care to students.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the supervising teacher, paras will implement the educational program for individual students. Provide prompts, discriminative stimuli, consequences and pace tasks as specified by the supervising teacher. Perform a variety of routine tasks, such as feeding, toileting, and busing, paras will also assist with the instructional process by providing reinforcement and/or remedial activities for students in specific subjects as assigned.

Successful applicants will:
In small groups or with individual students, assist in academic instruction and/or remediation based upon teacher's instruction and/or lesson plans.
Assist the intervention teacher in administering a variety of assessments and monitoring/reporting student progress.
Assist with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials
Assist in clerical tasks related to student instruction and Title I compliance and assist in maintaining a neat, orderly and attractive learning environment, not to exceed ten percent of work time and not when direct student instruction is possible.
Provide playground/yard supervision.
Provide prompts, discriminative stimuli, consequences and appropriate pacing of tasks individually or in small groups, as directed by the supervisor.
Change or improve techniques for providing prompts, discriminative stimuli, consequences and pacing of tasks as directed by supervisor.
Record complete and accurate program data, as required by the program.
Attend weekly staff meetings, provide program input, demonstrate program procedures, follow program recommendations.
Provide supervision in such activities as field trips, rest time, playground, meal service and transportation (bus/van) as required.
Perform student care tasks, such as feeding, personal hygiene and toileting, as necessary.
Prepare other related essential functions as assigned.
Performs other duties as needed or directed by teacher and/or principal.
Education Requirements
We are seeking individuals who have relevant experience working with special education students. Additionally, you must hold a high school diploma, or it recognized equivalent (i.e., GED) and hold one of the following:
A bachelor’s degree
An associate degree
Two years of study at an institution of higher ed and at least 72 quarter credit or 48 semester credit hours completed of post-secondary education.
Completion of a district administered competency exam that demonstrates a basic understanding of English, Math, and Reading.
Additional Requirements
Successful applicants must have or be willing to obtain these items prior to starting in their new role
CPR/First Aid training within each two-year period.
TB clearance and fingerprint clearance (DOJ and FBI).
Valid California driver’s license.
Physical Requirements

1. Ability to see, read and distinguish colors, a computer screen, educational materials, books and other printed material, with or without vision aids.
2. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and outdoors, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
3. Ability to sit at a desk, table, on low chairs, on the floor or on mats, for extended periods of time.
4. Manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data on a computer, to write, and to perform assigned tasks using both hands.
5. Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may hear and understand on the telephone, in classrooms or outdoors.
6. Physical agility, using safe and proper techniques to life up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 35 pounds to waist height.
7. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, sit, climb and descend stairs, and to reach overhead as necessary.
8. Ability to walk on uneven terrain, play yards and school grounds.
9. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
10. Mental acuity to think clearly and rationally to solve problems.
