About the role:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, the Executive Director of Estate and Planned Giving leads a strategic, university-wide planned giving program grounded in industry best practices. This role oversees the work of two team members and is responsible for managing a personal portfolio of prospects, as well as collaborating with gift officers to secure legacy gifts.
In addition to frontline fundraising, the Executive Director develops and executes targeted marketing strategies to engage alumni, donors, and friends of the University—elevating awareness of planned giving opportunities and strengthening long-term philanthropic support.
The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $120,000 - $145,000 annually based on experience.
What you will be doing:
Managing a portfolio of planned giving prospects, advancing relationships toward solicitation and closure, and overseeing stewardship activities for planned gift donors.
Securing a minimum number of documented planned gift intentions annually through personal outreach and collaborating with gift officers on solicitation strategies. Gift types include bequests, life income gifts, IRA and insurance beneficiary designations, qualified charitable distributions, and appreciated assets.
Leading the strategic vision for the university’s planned giving program, including overseeing multi-channel marketing efforts and partnering with senior administrators, major gift officers, alumni relations, and academic units to identify opportunities and develop donor strategies.
Producing timely, accurate, and compelling written materials such as gift proposals, illustrations, contact reports, briefings, and donor correspondence.
Educating and supporting University Development colleagues in identifying and communicating planned giving opportunities, thereby advancing team-wide fundraising goals.
Partnering with Donor Relations to recognize and engage Heritage Society members, while also participating in additional duties as assigned.
Demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by prioritizing decision-making and policy development that recognizes the impact of socio-cultural factors—such as race, gender, ability, sexuality, and socio-economic status—on the success of students, faculty, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree.
Five (5) years of planned giving fundraising. experience
One (1) year of experience working closely with legal and financial professionals in designing and executing planned giving instruments
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in higher education fundraising.
Training in deferred giving software, including current laws and national best practices.
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Certification as a planned giving specialist.
Entrepreneurial spirit.
Demonstrated success and effectiveness in major and planned gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts.
A commitment to higher education, understanding of university academics and scholarship and ability to articulate a compelling case for annual discretionary support of private higher education and student life.
Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
