Under supervision, perform unskilled and semi-skilled work consisting of repair, cleaning, operation, modification, inspection, replacement, and maintenance of structures and related utility equipment; perform protective coating of equipment and civil structures such as water and chemical supply lines, safety barriers and pumps; monitor and maintain pipe and valve vault installations. Perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as carpentry, assist with electrical conduit and structures, welding, plumbing, painting, masonry, concrete placements, and finishing; operate, service, and make adjustments to light, medium and heavy equipment, such as trucks, loaders, skid steers, cranes, boats, and other equipment. Application of pesticides and herbicides in accordance with Federal, State, and local agency regulations. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Construct, paint, maintain, clean, repair and inspect District’s water treatment facilities and distribution system including crawling, climbing and entering a variety of facilities and structures. Operate various construction and maintenance equipment, including hands tools, vehicles, forklifts, light, medium and heavy equipment as required Research and procure necessary parts for repairs or replacement Communicate with contractors, vendors, and District staff for facility repairs and maintenance functions Complete restoration work including painting, interior plumbing, and HVAC inspections on water treatment facilities to District standards. Clean and maintain vehicles, equipment, facilities and tools. Install or assist with installation of new pumps, motors, control valves, and facility operating equipment as necessary under general or limited supervision. Performs a variety of basic reports and records relating to equipment used and tasks assigned. Performs a variety of heavy physical work in addition to the general maintenance responsibilities, including digging and backfilling trenches, clearing of brush, limbs, and trees for right-of-way and facilities access. Installs and lays pipelines and conduits under general and limited supervision, cut and fit pipes, backfill trenches, and performs other tasks incidental to repair and maintenance. Performs confined space entry safety watches. Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, blueprints, and plans in the performance of work assignments. Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other District employees, and the public using principles of good customer service. Perform routine cleaning of potable water tanks Conduct routine inspections and maintain records of eye wash stations, fire extinguishers and ladders Perform annual backflow prevention assembly testing and calibration Performs maintenance and minor repairs to irrigation and other landscaping systems Check fuel or water sight glass/gauge to determine fluid levels on tools, machines or equipment (hydraulic, lubricating, fuel, cooling, ) and perform preventive maintenance on a variety of tools, equipment or machinery Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of potable water distribution systems including: line repair, replacement, flushing, disinfecting, testing, pipe cutting, service, ARVs, and valve installation, replacement, and exercising. Knowledge of: General construction and maintenance materials, procedures and equipment used in construction, repair, maintenance, inspection and cleaning of water treatment, irrigation, and water conveyance facilities. Operation and general maintenance of construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, loaders, skid steers, cranes, boats and other related equipment. Servicing and minor maintenance of hand tools and small power tools. The function and capabilities of common machine tools and equipment Safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and mechanical equipment. Preventive maintenance and safety practices and techniques. Commonly used desktop computer software, including spreadsheets, word processing, and databases. Education and Experience Guidelines:Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Ideal candidates will have supplemental technical courses in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, water technology, or a closely related field or background. Experience: Four years of varied construction or maintenance experience in any combination of functions such as maintenance carpentry, pipe fitting, painting, welding, plumbing, concrete, or electrical work, and which must have included one year of experience operating light, medium or heavy maintenance or construction equipment. A background in general construction, equipment operation, weed abatement, utility work, pump repair and demonstrated interest in water treatment or distribution are highly desirable. License or Certificate: The holder of this position must posses a valid, appropriate California operator’s license and maintain a clean driving record at all times; provide evidence of a clean driving record before beginning employment, as evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents. Possession of a Class A license may be required.
