Serve as the attending medical expert/attending pathologist in the performance and interpretation of all areas of laboratory medicine relevant to your training in Pathology, Pediatric Pathology and Neuropathology (including eye pathology, central and peripheral neuropathology). This will include continuous daytime service Monday through Friday, and may also include some night time and weekend call.

Serve as the primary neuropathologist at CHC, including the autopsy neuropathology, peripheral nerve pathology and frozen section support at that institution.

Perform and facilitate cross institutional consultation (CHC to UCH or vice versa), as you will be assisting with neuropathology coverage at both sites. Given the separate EMR and departments, this will require great attention to effective communication and written documentation, whenever diagnostic data is copied or transmitted. Hand off of cases must include documentation and follow departmental protocols.

Participate in quality improvement processes and projects.

Participate in and or lead (as the pathologist) multidisciplinary conferences.

Provide on call coverage on rotation with other physicians, nights and weekends.

Attend post-mortem examinations at either site (predominantly neuropathology).

Education - 25%

Assist other faculty and trainees in the assessments of strengths and weaknesses in the educational programs in pediatric pathology and neuropathology.

Serve as a neuropathology attending clinical educator at both sites for fellows, residents, medical students and others rotating or assigned to your service such as neurology, neuroradiology trainees, through didactic or other educational activities.

Participate in continuing education efforts of the laboratory staff and technologists.

Participate in the Department of Pathology residency and fellowship program activities, including recruitment interviews and activities.

Participate in School of Medicine (SOM) and affiliated school educational programs, as a small or large group educator, or one on one, as a mentor educator.

Scholarship 20%

As a faculty member of the University you are expected to be academically productive and to assist others under your supervision with their scholarly activities. Examples of such academic productivity are provided in the guidelines for promotion and tenure of the School of Medicine. These may include original scientific or theme focused manuscripts, reviews or case-reports, lectures, tutorials, or other forms of professional achievement. We do not expect you to obtain your own external grants, however, participation on grants as a co-investigator, collaborator or subcontracting expert are encouraged as long as it does not preclude your primary responsibilities noted above.

You are eligible to apply for intradepartmental funding to support small research efforts, as long as you include one of our residents or fellows, and mentor them as part of the project. This requires you to obtain IRB approval (if needed), submit a three page grant application, and provide a budget.

Service 5 %

All faculty are expected to serve the Department of Pathology, the School of Medicine and the University, as well as your sites of practice hospitals through participation in committees, meetings, and other activities. Be aware that service to the greater Denver community is also strong suggested, and each of these efforts will be considered part of your academic portfolio for the purpose of promotion. All faculty of the department are required to attend monthly faculty meetings and grand rounds seminars; as clinical responsibilities allow.
