Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.Principal Level :Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential "wet" hazards. Principal Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.Principal Laboratory Science Professionals either act as work/team leads for 2 or more FTE Professionals or are the subject matter experts (SME) in a particular area. SMEs possess a deep knowledge and oversight of a specific process, function and/or technology. SMEs are considered an authority in the area and are educated on the subject and are also able to share their knowledge with other stakeholders. Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.The primary responsibilities of the position will be to support specimen preparation and data collection by new and current facility users, and to generally help the campus community apply EM to their research. The person in this position will participate in all operations at the EM facility, including EM specimen preparation and initial screening, operation of two state-of-the-art electron microscopes (120kV and 200kV), automated EM data collection and preliminary analysis of EM data. The cryo-EM Technician will keep the microscopes ready for use, will set up and facilitate automated data collection, and might advise users on initial steps of EM image analysis. The person will also help with managing microscope time booking and basic day-to-day instrument maintenance and (including ancillary equipment). The Cryo-EM Technician will report to (and receive training from, as needed) Prof Francisco Asturias, Director of the cryo-EM facility.Experienced cryo-EM practitioners, as well as recent graduates, or current Research Associates with a background in structural biology, physics, or chemistry, are encouraged to apply.Examples of Duties PerformedSenior Level:Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions

Perform routine maintenance and interactions with service engineers

Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects

Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research

Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results

Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced

Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas

Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed

Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions

Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information as related to cryo-EM data

Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit, and related issues

Review and implement lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs

Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

Prepare and screen stained and cryo EM samples

Set up and monitor automated data collection with CMOS and direct electron detectors

Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions

Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects

Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives

Assist and train junior team members and new facility users

Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) . Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies

Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership

Manage booking and billing for microscopes

Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines

Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders through guiding facility users through the initial steps of EM data screening and processing

Principal Level, all the above and:Oversee and provide informal leadership to the team members, including managing day-to-day priorities, evaluating, and redistributing workloads on a temporary basis, and mentoring staff

Provide input and feedback to leadership on team members' overall performance, performance evaluations, opportunities for development, and process improvement initiatives

Identify training and development opportunities for new and existing team members

Act as a Subject Matter Expert and authority in the area(s) of Structural Biology, Instrumentation, and Computational Biology

Principle Professional: 61,832 -78,651
