BackStory is an anti-racist organization committed to actively creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for all staff, volunteers, participants, and stakeholders regardless of race, religion, orientation, gender, or other affiliation or identity. It is a core belief of this organization that ability to pay, and adaptive needs should never present a barrier to participation in the arts.

- The Mindset of an “Owner”. We are all “Stakeholders” (fully committed and engaged staff), and no matter how many hours you spend with us, you’re as much a part of what we do as anyone. You need to have that mindset – you are an incredibly valuable part of our team and our customers will get to know you and lean on you to help them.

- The Mindset of an Adult – We’re not looking for someone who needs to be told what to do, when to show up, what time recess is, and when they can go home. We’re looking for someone who is a self-managed, self-motivated adult who knows what RESULT we want, and enjoys being proactive about accomplishment without being watched, managed or directed. There are no managers at Backstory, and none of us “manage” each other. We all work together in community to get things done, and we need someone who will join us as an equal team member, not as an “underling.”

- Learning Something That Stretches You - A growth mindset is a requirement to being on this team. Everyone is expected to embrace their limitations and accept they are not experts at everything and ask for help often.

- In-Studio Classes and Workshops - Training is provided to teach established programming based in performance skills. The Artistic Instructor is expected and highly encouraged to add their own skills, uniqueness and creativity to our baseline format to help students develop core theatre skills. Studio performance classes utilize prewritten scripts (for older age groups) or collaboratively develop adapted scripts (with K-2nd grade students) to rehearse shows with memorized lines, costumes, props, set pieces/scene changes and structured blocking at varying levels of difficulty. Many classes culminate in public performances. The Artistic Instructor is responsible for working with the Artistic Director to collect all needed costumes/properties/set items from BackStory’s stock and transporting them to the venue with the Artistic Director’s support. Instructors work directly with venue staff to direct technical show needs and works with BackStory inventory to create show programs, sound/effects for performance, and select projected backdrop images.
