POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs duties involved in maintenance of all city parks and open space properties to maintain a safe, clean and functional environment.

JOB FUNCTIONS / SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintain park integrity through turf management program, (mow, irrigate, chemical application, aeration, fertilization and top dress), shrub and tree maintenance, trash and graffiti removal, vandalism repair, and snow removal as required.

Performs duties related to construction: concrete, retaining walls, drainage, grade work, erosion control, and installation of amenities.

Operates large and small equipment including but not limited to (mowers, snow plows, tractors, loaders) as required.

Inspect equipment and tools for safety.

Inspect, repair and maintain traffic medians, park sprinklers, turf, playground equipment and park amenities.

Schedule and program both manual and computerized irrigation systems.

Performs record keeping duties for playground, operation equipment, task, expense reports, and pesticide application forms.

Attends trainings, seminars, and meetings as required.

Assign and inspect work of seasonal employees, volunteer and community service.

Flexibility to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service.

Acts with the customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for customers.

Exercises appropriate level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Strong knowledge of sport facilities: tennis/basketball courts, skate parks, disc golf, exercise courses, football/soccer/baseball fields, volleyball, and lacrosse.

Strong knowledge and experience with urban park maintenance including horticultural practices, landscape, construction, herbicides, and irrigation system maintenance.

Strong manual dexterity skills to operate tools, equipment, and machinery.

Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.

Basic computer skills.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

May perform operation and maintenance of viewing/interactive water fountains.

May perform maintenance of Old Town District.

May perform lake operations.

Other duties as required.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:

Receives direct supervision under the direction of the parks supervisor. Plans own work and work of others to meet defined work plans and objectives. Defined procedures cover most duties including department policies, laws, and regulations of applying pesticides, traffic controls, safety policies, noise ordinance, MSDS sheets, basic state, federal, and local laws, city ordinances, laws for locates, CDLs, Division of Wildlife, usage guidelines, special interest requirements, and Arvada personnel rules and procedures. Generally expected to deal with different and specialized situations in the job.

Financial Accountability:

Makes recommendations to supervisor for budget allocations that pertain to functional area. Authorized to make purchases up to $2,000.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / QUALIFICATIONS:

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

Work is primarily performed in an outdoor environment with moderate noise levels. Physical effort and activities include: constant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, exposure to moving equipment hazards, pesticides, bio hazards, noise, weather conditions, vibrating equipment, working in high places 6' or above, working in confined spaces and, traffic control. Also requires exposure to various chemicals, dust and fumes, insects, and contact with animals. Requires strenuous physical work with heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 80 pounds frequently.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE):

High school diploma or GED equivalency and one (1) year experience in park maintenance or related field required. Position requires one (1) of the following certifications: Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicators License (#206-Ornamental Turf) or Certified Playground Inspector, or Pesticide Applicators License #207-Ornamental Insect and Plant Disease Control or Certified Cross Connection and Backflow Device Tester are needed within six (6) months of appointment. Each certification must be maintained during entire period of employment. Valid Colorado commercial driver license, Class B, is required within six (6) months of appointment. Motor vehicle records check is required.
