Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Methamphetamine Use Disorder

The study is for adults with long-term severe methamphetamine use disorder, who have tried and failed other available treatments and are interested in stopping or cutting down their use of methamphetamines. 

The study requires surgery and a 12+ month commitment in the clinical trial including detox, 30-day residential care, intensive outpatient care and follow up in the study over 1 year. All participants will receive 6 months of deep brain stimulation and 6 months off stimulation.

Main Inclusion Criteria:

1) Adults age 22-65

2) Current diagnosis of severe methamphetamine use disorder (MUD)

3) History of failed prior treatments for methamphetamine use disorder (including residential)

4) Use of methamphetamine at least 10 days in the past month

5) Interested in stopping or cutting down methamphetamine use

6) Able to complete 1 week of inpatient detoxification prior to surgery and 4 weeks of inpatient treatment following surgery

7) Lives in Colorado

Other study inclusion/exclusion criteria will be evaluated by the study team.
