Lead Climbing Instructor

Position: Lead Climbing Instructor

Department: Recreation

Reports to: Recreation Manager

Location: Buchanan Park Recreation Center

Status: Part-Time 2 (< 20 hours per week)

Hourly Wage: $21.79-$35.00 hourly Hiring range

Nature of Work

Under the direction of the Supervisor, this position is responsible for leading and teaching skills pertaining to climbing instruction and supervises participants safely in a public recreation facility.

Essential Functions

Instructs climbing classes including competitive team, open climb times, belay certifications, and belay classes.

Must possess a highly defined focus towards both internal and external guest service.

Explains and demonstrates use of apparatus and equipment or skill

Explains and demonstrate principles, techniques, and methods of climbing in order to achieve proficiency

Observes during practice to detect and correct mistakes.

Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations

Manage classes of children by keeping attention through activities.

Find substitutes for classes when not available

Communicates with participants, parents, coordinator(s) and supervisor as necessary

Attends all required meetings and trainings

Sets up, cleans up, and moves equipment for proper class or party.

Checks equipment and space for proper safety

Report accidents and injuries that occur during class (administer first-aid as necessary)

Oversees Competitive Climbing Team

Sets routes, cleans holds and reviews safety protocols

Management & Supervisory Duties

Oversees activities and actions of applicable program participants.

Oversees activities and actions of program staff.

Constantly monitors climbing instructors for best practices on wall safety.

Illustrative Examples of Duties

Set up class-specific equipment and return to storage.

Perform all required duties in a timely manner as assigned.

Check equipment and conduct inventory on a regular basis to ensure a safe environment for class participants.

Knowledge

Expert knowledge of modern principles, instructional methods, practices, equipment, and techniques relating to the functional areas of responsibility.

Thorough knowledge of applicable class curriculum and/or lesson plans.

Knowledge of District policies and procedures.

Abilities

Ability to transfer knowledge of specialized area to class participants.

Ability to instruct participants properly and safely to reach goal.

Ability to instruct other climbing instructors on best practices for overall safety during classes or open climbs.

Required Training, Experience & Qualifications

Two or more years of experience in the climbing industry

Prefer indoor climbing wall instructor certification from recognized programs

Prefer AMGA SPI Certification for outdoor summer climbing camps

CPR/AED and First-Aid Certification, or have the ability to obtain within six months of employment
