The Division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response; State Public Health Laboratory; Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch; Immunization Branch; Public Health Informatics, Reporting, Technology Branch; Refugee Branch; and Operations Branch. The Division exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively prepare for, monitor, detect, diagnose, investigate, and nimbly respond to all types of conditions, events and disasters that impact the public’s health.The Unit:The Microbiology program exists to provide accurate scientific data and test results in regard to detection, identification, and typing of microorganisms of public health importance in clinical, animal, and environmental specimens, including culture independent diagnostic test (CIDTs)-positive specimens, using current culture based and molecular biological methods. The unit exists to ensure accurate and timely test results for support of patient diagnosis and management, epidemiological investigations of communicable disease outbreaks, and rapid response to bioterrorism events; to provide the public with advice and consultation and; to provide reference, teaching, and consultation services for infectious diseases. The Microbiology Supervisor would have direct oversite of both Clinical Microbiology as well as Environmental Microbiology.What you will be doing: This position exists to manage the daily activities of the Clinical and Environmental Microbiology work units supervising staff performing assays. This position is responsible for ensuring that specimens are handled and processed following established procedures and CLIA, FDA and ISO 17025 guidelines. This position performs testing, utilizing conventional and molecular testing for the identification of pathogenic microorganisms, in submitted specimen, including CIDT-positive specimens, in accordance with existing methodologies and following established algorithms.Supervision
Plan, prioritize, and assign workload, and analyze and monitor workflow and progress to ensure the quality and quantity of work meets standards, deadlines for deliverables, and program goals and objectives.
Establish work schedules, review and approve work time and absences using the automated system.
Identify training and developmental needs, and provide training to develop skills. ? Provide feedback and coaching; write, review, and sign performance plans; evaluate and sign performance evaluations.
Resolve employee performance problems and issues, disputes, and informal (Step 1) grievances; issue corrective actions and initiate discipline as needed.
Analytical Testing and Oversight
Chooses which test methods will be performed by laboratory staff.
Performs all duties as technical supervisor as defined by CLIA, ISO 17025, FDA and EPA. ? Trains staff in the use of equipment and procedures.
Assigns staff to specific testing activities and monitors competency and proficiency.
Contributes to grant applications and tracks grant deliverables
Method Development and Implementation
This position troubleshoots existing methodologies, develops new methodologies, and identifies new technologies to ensure state of the art public health testing.
Conduct productive literature searches for troubleshooting existing methodologies.
Uses scientific experience and knowledge to identify testing methods and enhance testing.
Uses scientific experience and knowledge to identify new technology appropriate for use in the work unit (based on personnel ability and cost).
General Laboratory Support
Maintains inventory of testing reagents and supplies.
Reviews all QA/QC logs and individual quality control plans (IQCPs); and initiates corrective actions when necessary.
Administrative Support and Customer Service
Prints test results and provides to customers.
Interprets test results for customers and staff.
Verifies results before they are released.
Provides technical laboratory interpretation and support to internal and exteternal customers, including routine communication with communicable disease epidemiologists.

Method Development and Validation: Demonstrated expertise in conducting method development and validation studies, including experience with troubleshooting existing methodologies, developing method validation plans, and creating standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements and compliance standards in the context of laboratory testing, particularly as they pertain to public health and safety.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in handling and manipulating hazardous chemicals and high-pressure gases, as well as operating, calibrating, and maintaining analytical equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Collaboration and Training: Ability to work effectively in a team environment, demonstrated experience in advising and training other team members, and active participation in collaborative problem-solving initiatives.
Analytical Skills: Ability to perform and interpret complex scientific analyses accurately and efficiently, with attention to detail and adherence to quality assurance requirements.
