Primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners care for students, with emphasis on preventive care, education, and continuity. The medical staff are supported by a full range of laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry, optometry, and nutrition services on site, behavioral health and integrated care with counseling staff enhances the treatment of students with behavioral health concerns. Minor procedures are performed in the clinic. The Medical Assistant assists with the intake process (taking and documenting vital signs and assisting with completion of health records), assisting in the delivery of routine comfort measures (providing oral fluids, ice packs or bandages for minor injuries), nursing care (escorting or transporting patients to area of care, cleaning and bandaging abrasions or wounds) and observing, reporting, and documenting patient behavior during their visit at the health clinic. The Medical Assistant may perform medication administration (oral and injections), venipuncture, EKG’s, and point of care testing to facilitate diagnostic testing ordered by a medical provider, and other tasks delegated by nursing staff.This Medical Assistant works 40 hours per week during the academic year (approximately 38-39 weeks) and 32 hours per week during scheduled CSU breaks (approximately 13-14 weeks). This position may voluntarily work additional hours to cover employees who are absent or on leave and during other clinic events, as requested by the management. The full-time salary is $42,183 – $50,503, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This full-time salary will be prorated based upon a 32-40 hour per week work schedule. The Medical Assistant reports directly to the Manager of Nursing Services.The Medical Assistant will work primarily in the Psychiatry Services Clinic, and will flex to other areas within the Medical Services Clinic when the approved training has been completed and competency has been established. The primary areas of the Medical Services Clinic are Acute Care, Primary Care, Psychiatry, Women’s and Gender Care, and Allergy/Immunizations.Required Job QualificationsEducation/Certification

High School Diploma or GED

Diploma from a Medical Assistant training program at a nationally accredited school

Certified Medical Assistant ( CMA ) or Registered Medical Assistant ( RMA ) certification must be valid, current and in good standing

Certificate in Basic Life Support ( BLS ), valid and current, or the ability to obtain prior to start date

Experience

One year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant

Implements Standing Orders to deliver timely patient care in the initial stages of the visit, such as: administering OTC meds, collecting and performing point of care testing, ordering x-rays, and obtaining EKG’s based on patient chief complaint and presentation

Administers injectable medications to patient based on provider order

Transports patients when needed (providing a wheelchair), if the patient presents with a health need that limits ambulation (such as a leg injury or fatigue and weakness)

Obtains and documents the patient’s health information (vital signs, height, weight, health history, and reason for visit)

Delivers and completion of various forms and paperwork

Delivers routine comfort measures for clinic patients including, but not limited to: provides oral fluids or administers over-the-counter analgesics, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, with guidance and supervision when ordered

Supports treatment measures when the patient presents with an injury, such as, but not limited to, applies a dressing or ice pack until a nurse or medical provider has seen the patient

Supports providers as needed to complete care (e.g. obtaining orthopedic supplies, assists with splint application) and assists nursing staff to provide first aid care and other procedures as appropriate for the patient’s presenting health complaint (such as ear irrigation for cerumen impaction or splinter removal)

Completes procedure setup and assists provider staff with procedures, such as laceration repair

Performs point of care testing in the clinic setting, reporting results to providers, and recording related documentation

Performs venipuncture and accurate collection of blood samples for ordered lab tests

Observes and reports patient behavior

Provides indirect patient care by documenting patient information and treatment in the electronic health record and reviewing and signing off patient’s electronic health record; assists in retrieval of other health records; takes patients to Referral Coordinator to obtain outside medical records (ER visits); escorts patients to various ancillary services

Provides support/assistance in reception, patient scheduling, allergy/immunizations, and other departments as needed

Uses computer skills and knowledge work with information technology to provide accurate documentation in the patient’s electronic health record

Participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the quality of position processes and programs

Completes administrative tasks, such as scheduling, information collecting, and medical records requests

Completes prior authorization insurance phone calls and medication refill requests

Trains and orients new staff once established competencies and work knowledge has been achieved and demonstrated.
