JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Town Forester & Open Space Manager, the Open Space Maintenance Tech I position is to assist in maintaining open space, natural areas, and trails within the Town of Berthoud
Essential Functions: The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time
Performs technical open space maintenance, repair, and land management duties including but not limited to mowing, weed trimming, noxious species mitigation, fertilization, seeding, irrigation, fence repair, and litter control
Performs trail maintenance including but not limited to trail design, installation, mapping, upkeep, and repair
Assists with Bike Park trail maintenance projects as needed.
Assists in pond, lake, and reservoir maintenance including but not limited to cattail control, algae and muck control, water dying, fish stocking, litter control, dock inspections and repair, and aeration pump upkeep
Assists in wetland restoration and wildlife habitat preservation
Assists in installing and maintaining interpretive/educational signage
Operates and maintains open space related equipment including but not limited to Town vehicles, truck and trailer, slope mowers, tractors, front-end loaders, skid steers, UTV’s, etc.
Safely and properly operates and maintains power equipment and other open space related power tools including by not limited to chainsaws, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, backpack sprayers, etc.
Assists in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing irrigation drip line systems for Town owned and maintained trees located in open space, natural areas, and along trail systems
Assists in maintaining of the Town’s xeriscape garden
Professionally communicate and conduct consultations to the public – in person, on the phone, and via email – regarding open space, natural area, and trail issues, concerns, and management needs
Performs snow removal on Town owned and maintained sidewalks and trails
Assists in forestry operations including tree maintenance, removal, and planting
Assists in hanging banners, American flags, and Christmas lighting/decorations throughout Town parks and along Mountain Avenue
Assists other departments including Parks and Recreation Staff with miscellaneous projects and operations including event set ups.
Ability to work on-call, holidays, and weekends as needed.
Other duties as may be assigned by Public Works Operations Manager
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
High School/GED Required
College 4 year degree in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, or a closely related field preferred but not required.
Work Experience:
1 or more years of progressive experience in open space and natural resource management required.

Native grass, tree, and shrub identification and nomenclature for species of the Front Range of Colorado
Comprehensive knowledge of native grass, tree, and shrub biology and physiology
Experience using GIS devices and mapping software
Ability to meet departmental goals, and establishes a cooperative working relationship with other employees, departments, and the general public
Ability to soundly communicate both verbally and in writing
Ability to resolve conflicts, utilizing various problem-solving techniques
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Perform all job duties in a safe manner
Ability to stay calm under stressful situations
Previous experience in Parks & Recreation maintenance
Previous experience in forestry maintenance operations including pruning, removal, and planting
Ability to communicate effectively in person; over the phone; in email and writing
Licenses and Certifications:
Colorado Commercial Pesticide Applicators License (in Rangeland and Right-of-Way) or ability to obtain within one (1) year
CPR/First Aid Certification within 6 months
Valid Colorado Drivers License is required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequently carrying/lifting up to 100 lbs. Climbing stairs, crouching grasping, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking and stooping. Working outdoors in extreme cold or heat. Occasional loud noise, hazards and heights up to 65'.
