Summary:
The Parks Technician I-III must be a hardworking, self-motivated, and dependable individual able to work with or without supervision and enjoys working with the public. This position is responsible for a variety of duties necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Parks Department. The Parks Maintenance Technician shall work at the direction of the Parks Department Supervisor and Public Works Operations Manager.
HOURS: Typical hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends.
Additional Hours: Will be required to perform on-call duty, work weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary to meet the needs of the Town of Berthoud
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks/cemetery
Maintains parks, equipment, buildings, and facilities with monthly maintenance records
Performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded, and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects
Performs field preparations for scheduled baseball, softball, soccer and flag football games
Performs maintenance, repairs and water scheduling on irrigation systems
Performs reservation preparations for scheduled pavilion and/or park rentals
Performs minor plumbing or building repair duties
Performs snow and ice removal on and around Town of Berthoud parks properties
Removes and disposes of trash and litter
Operates small trucks, dump trucks, tractors, skid steers, utility vehicles, ATVs, ride–on and walk-behind mowing equipment
May be required to operate heavy equipment
Utilizes a wide variety of construction tools and mechanical equipment
Must have working knowledge of standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology and safe work practices of maintenance, construction, and gardening/landscape work, along with maintenance equipment and tools
May be required to interact with residents on site or when requested
May be required to utilize department or Town wide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties
May be required to supervise seasonal staff
Involves significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting heavy objects, operating hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles daily
Considerable time spent working outdoors in occasional extreme heat and cold
May be required to apply pesticides/fertilizers and chemicals to plants, lawns, shrubs and trees
Keep informed of all changes in duties related to the position
Perform all other duties as may be assigned by the Public Works Operations Manager

Education:
High School diploma or GED required
Work Experience:
Parks Technician I – Experience in landscape maintenance is helpful but not required
Parks Technician II – Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience working with Parks Maintenance Operations
Parks Technician III – 2 to 4 years of experience working with Parks Maintenance Operations
Certificates and Licenses:
Parks Technician I
The Parks Technician I will be required to complete the below training/certifications as well as demonstrate knowledge, use and maintenance of a Walker Mower, Deere Mower, weed whip, backpack blower, edger and Toro 3-wheel field groomer with supervision.
A valid Colorado Driver’s license and evidence of insurability is required
CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment
Complete in-house equipment trainings
Complete in-house CIRSA safety trainings
CDOT Flagger training or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
Completed OSHA 10 training
Parks Technician II
In addition to the requirements listed above, the Parks Technician II will have increased responsibility and has been trained to operate and maintain the large Toro mower, Toolcat, pull/back up trailers and use pesticides/fertilizers with limited supervision. Maintenance and maintenance records for all equipment and vehicles will be the responsibility of the Parks Technician II.
Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License in Turf 206 and Ornamental 207 categories
Certified Playground Safety Inspector
Parks Technician III
In addition to the requirements listed above, the Parks Technician III will have increased responsibility and ability to operate all equipment unsupervised. Playground and facility inspection records and maintenance will be the responsibility of the Parks Technician III.
Certifications in the following irrigation courses
Basic WeatherTRAK System Introduction
Rainbird – Introduction to Irrigation and Installation
Groundskeeper University certificate through Beacon Athletics
Completion of at least one National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Landscape Management Certificate Program (Installation, Irrigation, or Maintenance)
