Summary
As a Veterinary Technician at Laporte Animal Clinic, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality medical care to our patients and compassion and education to our clientele . This position is essential in supporting our veterinarians and ensuring that all animals receive the compassionate care they deserve.
Needed immediately-full time Registered (or certified, licensed etc) Veterinary Technician with at least 2 years experience in a small animal clinic for our fast paced but small, non-corporate, intimate veterinary clinic-we treat dogs/cats/small mammals/rabbits/as well as limited birds and reptiles. We emphasize client education, with respect and friendliness towards our clients, excellent communication and followup with clients, thorough and caring veterinary care for our patients, while maintaining a small town, friendly and family like atmosphere-applicant must have excellent communication skills for interacting with clients and other staff, as well as being accurate in performing duties and efficient with their time. Technician will have some responsibilities supervising and training assistants and student staff members, as well as assuring clinic supplies and medications are ordered and stocked and helping maintain organization and cleanliness of clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities
Answering phones and scheduling appointments as well as technician duties are required due to small size of clinic-there will be much client education and interaction
Checks patient medical records for past histories, acquires past medical records as needed-reviews past records to document ongoing or past medical issues as well as upcoming due procedures in the animals medical record-accurately enters treatments and charges in computer.
Restrains animals for Veterinarian as required-must be able to kneel on floor for extended periods of time and restrain large dogs on floor as well as smaller animals on tables- -must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
Educates clients on preventative care, including but not limited to vaccination recommendations for all lifestyles of cats/dogs, dental care, use of routine medications, and parasite prevention-including being able to explain lifecycles of common intestinal parasites as well as heartworm.
Maintains client educational material in exam rooms and on website, etc as needed
Competent in drawing blood, jugular or cephalic, accessing veins quickly and minimizing patient discomfort to perform testing procedures.
Performs specimen testing procedures accurately on blood, urine or other samples according to medical orders using IDEXX catalyst and urinalysis machines as well as ability to perform manual fecal microscopic examinations-
Assists Veterinarian with in-patient care in daily treatments to include maintaining and calculating IV fluids, draws blood samples as requested
Perform anesthesia induction and monitoring.
Administers medication and feeds patients as directed-including exotics-assures safe and proper housing for all patients, including use of incubator and oxygen in cage administration
Performs necessary lab work such as x-rays, blood profiles, urinalysis, heartworm tests, FELV/FIV tests, fecal tests, fungal cultures.
Documents test results and assures clients are notified of results
Prepares specimens for mailing to laboratories
Assures exam rooms are stocked daily with all necessary equipment
Schedules and/or performs routine maintenance of testing equipment.
Maintains cleanliness of exam rooms, waiting area and retail area at all times. Assists in animal care as needed.
Handles all tasks associated with x-ray process to include entry of patient information, proper positioning of animals, assuring appropriate radiation techniques and radiation safety protocols-emails radiographs to other clinics or radiologists as required-assures all radiographs are attached to patients files
Takes medical histories and vital signs of patients. documents in computer accurately and reliably
Perform tech appointments, such as pedicures, ear cleaning, anal gland expression, routine lab work, subcutaneous fluids, etc. as deemed appropriate by practice
Admits and discharges patients-assuring all information is acquired from clients during admission as well as making and explaining estimates and discussing aftercare-at discharge, educating clients on aftercare and medications, scheduling rechecks,etc
Efficiently and accurately dispenses prescriptions, assuring appropriate labelling, and providing explanation to clients on proper use and any important dispensing information for each medication-ability to also accurately call in and log prescriptions to outside pharmacies
Proficient in Dental prophylaxes, dental radiographs and charting of teeth
Perform client callbacks and updates as requested-assuring all callbacks have been completed-either by you or assigned to other staff members
Must quickly acquire knowledge of medications stocked and regularly used at clinic, as well as knowledge of prescription foods used

Qualifications
Current Registration license in Veterinary Technology valid in Colorado -Mandatory
Proven 2 years experience as a Veterinary Technician in a small animal clinic. Interested parties without this experience need not apply-other experience will not be considered adequate
Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology and procedures.
Ability to perform X-Rays, IV catheterization, Anesthesia, Dental prophylaxis and dental radiography, blood draws (cephalic and jugular) on cats and dogs, nail trims, anal gland expression, use of IDEXX blood analysis machines (training can be provided for this-but must have experience with some in house blood analyzer) , understanding Cornerstone (or similar) veterinary software, etc (responsibilities listed in more detail above)
Competence with animal handling for veterinary examinations and procedures is essential(dogs and cats mandatory, rabbits, birds, reptiles and other exotics is a plus but can be trained)
