The position functions as a construction project technician to ensure compliance with plans and specifications, to compile and check documentation that reports daily activities, and quantities of work performed to assure acceptability of work.Major Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Construction Inspection:

Certifies that contractor’s work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications on assigned projects.

Inspects contractors’ work procedures by being on site and being familiar with plans and specifications. Check inspection reports for description contractor’s work, calculations, and accuracy.

Completes the inspection classes, Traffic control, erosion control, and other technical classes required for the construction inspection.

Will be required to drive from the main office or nearest CDOT Maintenance facility to the project site on a daily basis to perform these duties and to drive the project site to perform the inspections, driver’s license will be required.

Assisting Project Engineer with project documentation, includes but not limited to writing 266’s, daily diaries, and quantity calculations.

Communicates and corresponds with other departments within CDOT along with federal, state, local agencies, consultants, contractors, utilities and the public regarding changes or information which has impact upon them.

Provides reviews and constructive input to plans and specifications, and assists in preparing advertisement packages for unit projects.

Material Testing:

Certify that materials incorporated during construction projects are in conformance with the contract by conducting and reviewing field and laboratory tests.

Document quantity and quality of the contractor’s materials by filling out various Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) forms.

Executes physical tests, as per the Materials Manuals. Includes testing the physical properties of concrete (slump, air content and compressive strength), soils and aggregate properties, compaction testing of embankments and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), laboratory testing of HMA including gradations. RICE and AC content.

Required to drive to project sites to perform duties and may be required to take samples to the main lab in Denver on occasion.

Training:

Studies CDOT manuals, attend assigned training classes and participate in seminars to enhance knowledge necessary to perform job duties.

Completes the inspector certification training program, Traffic control, erosion control, and other technical classes required for the construction inspection, such as Construction Project Administration, Claim Dispute Resolution, and etc.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours Monday – Friday

Night Work is expected; Generally, Sunday – Thursday night based on project work hours

Occasional weekend, day and night work is expected

Approximately 70% work is in the field, 30% in the office

Travel required during work hours throughout the region

Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado

Required to work in various weather conditions such as hot, cold, humid or windy conditions.

Required to lift up to 50 lbs.

Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic.

Required to work on variable terrain at project sites.

May need to assist with road closures during major weather events.

Required to operate CDOT vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsMinimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

AND

at least five years of experience in any combination of the following: monitoring construction projects, documenting materials testing, inspecting projects.

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least five years.

Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, environmental science, engineering, engineering technology, geology, mathematics, natural resource management, soil science, or a closely related degree.

Work experience in monitoring construction projects, documenting materials testing, and/or inspecting projects.

A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

Obtain technical certifications for LabCAT Levels A, B, C and E (Level E alternative: ACI Aggregate Technician Levels I & II), ACI Field Testing Technician, ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician, and WAQTC Soils Testing Technician within six months of hire.
