Overview

Responsible for the preparation of estimates in areas of excavating, earthwork, underground utilities, and other heavy civil projects in both the residential and commercial market for a family-owned excavating company located in NW Colorado. This position will work closely with Project Owners, Vendors, Subcontractors, Formen, company President, and Accounting staff. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong math skills are a requirement of this position as well as meticulous attention to detail.

Duties and Responsibilities

Review proposal specifications, drawings, and plans, and attend pre-bid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.

Proficiently prepare estimates by calculating various statistical data such as quantity take-offs, material price lists, labor costs per man-hour, and equipment costs and applying to complete scope of work.

Communicate effectively with vendors and subcontractors to receive accurate quotes for materials, equipment, and subcontractors.

Actively research, solicit and develop a network of relationships within the supply chain.

Review/research historical data (purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc.) and compile summary reports to develop guidelines and precedence for future estimates.

Incorporate historical data into unit and man-hour figures.

Proficiently maintain files of working documents for back-up to estimating figures including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.

Create, send, and manage subcontractor requests for proposal.

Develop bid package estimate documents.

Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality or availability of materials.

Follow awarded contracts as assigned – may include estimating extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring materials, etc.

Complete efforts under tight deadlines.

Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

5-years heavy construction/civil estimating experience

Experienced using HCSS HeavyBid software preferable

Proficient in Microsoft Office software

Ability to read and understand construction documents, plans, and drawings

Ability to complete take-offs of plans and specifications

Working knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings and specifications, building materials, and required standards applicable to discipline desirable

Highly proficient in email, phone call, written document, and in-person communications

Strong organizational skills

Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
