The Programming Director must have the necessary skills to direct, supervise and manage the resident activities for the facility. This position must also be versed in soliciting contributions and services for the facility along with knowledge and experience working with volunteers to assisted living activities.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Able to perform essential duties

High school diploma or GED preferred
Food Handler's Certification
Valid Driver's License
Proof of current auto insurance
Organizes a program of both group and individual activities based on the resident's individualized needs as identified by the initial assessment and in each resident's health care plan
Maintains a balance of recreational activities including physical, social, psychosocial, religious, diversional, intellectual, creative arts and crafts and special holiday activities
Provides motivation for participation in Residents Council and schedules a time and place for meetings of Residents Council
Ensures that group activities are scheduled at times that provide maximum involvement by interested residents including evenings and weekends
Meets individually with the resident and/or family members to determine areas of interest and need
Develops activity programs to allow resident to participate with their capabilities
Selects residents for appropriate activity participation according to each resident's activity interests, needs and potential
Communicates residents' programs to appropriate parties including residents, resident families, volunteers and facility staff. Communication may occur through the posting of a large monthly calendar in centralized locations within the building, circulation of copies of the monthly calendar to the aforementioned parties, posting of signs for special events, circulation of invitations, word of mouth invitations, telephone calls, the facility newsletter, etc.
Ultimately responsible for transportation of residents within the facility from one area to the designated area where activities occur. May recruit assistance of others; volunteers, facility staff, etc. to aid in this transportation process
Serves as person ultimately responsible for the facility's Volunteer Program. Supervises volunteers and activity personnel. May recruit and orient volunteers. Keeps records of the volunteer program and communicates the facility's volunteer needs to the general community.
Member of facility's management team – attends meetings as scheduled
May be included in rotation of off-hour on-call with Executive Administrator, Resident Services Director and other appropriate personnel
Participates in community planning related to the interests of the facility and arranges for the use of community facilities by the residents
Develops methods for effective utilization of community resources
Identifies free and low cost sources and resources for resident and facility's use.
Coordinates and purses activity/craft/holiday supplies within the budget guidelines and with approval of the Executive Administrator
Maintains the inventory of activity/craft/holiday supplies
Participates in the inservice program of the facility
Provides inservice training for all staff regarding activity program, reality orientation, volunteer services, etc.
Recognizes abnormal signs/symptoms which signify a physical change in resident's condition that would require nursing intervention
Is alert to conditions in the facility that may present a hazard to residents, staff and/or visitors. Reports condition to appropriate party.
Is familiar with the facility's Fire Evaluation Plan and Disaster Plan
Abides by the established policies of the facility and the licensing agency. Interprets for concerned parties
Keeps professional matters confidential
Develops methods for obtaining current knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to activity programs
