Hiring Range: $28.85-$34.61. The maximum pay for this position is $40.38.

The Light Mechanic II will perform preventive maintenance, diagnoses, and repair work on County light-duty vehicles. This is a journey-level, skilled position with the possibility of advancement.

Schedule: 4-10's- (Mon-Thurs), 7am-5:30pm. Flexible work arrangement. (Will be on call for 1 week a month.)

Essential Duties

-Performs A, B and C preventive maintenance (PM) services; Diagnoses mechanical failures, determines appropriate method of repair and completes repairs in a safe and timely manner. 80%

-Uses electronic scanners and laptop computers to diagnose electronic systems. Uses manuals, schematics and other printed or electronic data in the troubleshooting process. 80%

-Replaces and repairs tube and tubeless tires on light-duty vehicles. 20%

-Operates gas or arc welding equipment, a variety of hand and small power tools, metal press and/or metal lathes to repair and/or fabricate parts and tools. 5%

-Respond to emergency road service calls for mechanical breakdowns or drive-train failures, diagnose problems and make appropriate repairs. 5%

-Wash and steam clean equipment. 10%

-Uses the County computer system (CCG/FASTER Fleet Management System) to prepare work orders, recording labor and parts used on all County equipment repaired. 20%

-Test drives and performs safety inspections in the shop on County light-duty vehicles. Performs annual DOT inspections as required. 80%

-Attends a variety of light-duty vehicle repair training sessions for continuing education. 10%

-Maintains a clean and safe work area; performs duties in a safe manner; maintains an awareness of others in the work area. 100%

-Must provide his/her own tools and toolbox. 100%

-Observe safety and security procedures, use equipment and materials safely, and report potentially unsafe conditions. 100%

-Serves the community by demonstrating Eagle County Government mission and core values and following relevant policies and procedures. 100%

-Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification, or Registration:

-Three (3) years on-the-job experience as a journey-level mechanic performing routine maintenance on gasoline or diesel powered vehicles; or, any combination of education and experience which produces the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

-Completion of a technical training program with ASE certifications in Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or Transit Bus. - preferred

-Requires a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

-Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to obtain such CDL within six (6) months of employment. (CDL training and testing are available onsite. Job-specific training will be paid for by Eagle County)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Must be a self-starter

-Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written form.

-Possess knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions and/or the ability to use good judgment to be able to establish a safe work environment for self and others.

-Ability to establish effective working relationships with department supervisors and fellow workers.

-Ability to lift and carry moderately heavy materials, supplies and equipment (25-50 lbs.) frequently; and heavy materials, supplies and equipment (50-100 lbs.) occasionally.

-Ability to hear a wide range of sounds associated with equipment function and malfunction.

-Ability to perform work in/outdoors with exposure to work hazards from weather/environmental conditions, loud noises, moving parts and caustic substances when repairing and operating heavy equipment or using power tools.

-Ability to read & understand electrical schematics and use that information to find electrical problems on buses and other equipment.

-Able to recognize and report faulty and abnormally functioning diesel and gasoline-powered equipment, hydraulic systems, tires, tubes and wheels.

-Knowledge of methods, procedures, and materials common to repair and service diesel, gasoline and alternative fuel-powered vehicles and equipment.

-Ability to be available for on-call for emergency call-outs or weekend duty.

-Ability to safely operate automotive and heavy equipment, including automatic and manual shift transmissions.

-Knowledge in the safe use of hand tools/power tools used in the repair, cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

-Knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment parts and their uses
