The Medical Intensive Care Unit is a 16-bed unit that provides care to patients with a wide range of complex, highly acute medical issues. These issues include but are not limited to; respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver injury/failure, kidney injury/failure, sepsis, and drug and alcohol withdrawal. Under the supervision of a Critical Care Pulmonologist, the unit is staffed 24 hours-a-day with a team of Physician Assistants, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, and medical house staff physicians consisting of interns and residents. In the Medical ICU, our goal is to develop our staff into well-rounded, highly skilled medical professionals. The unit will push you to your limits as you will be working in a fast-paced environment where your critical thinking, vast medical knowledge, clear communication, and your extensive skillset will be challenged and grown. Job Summary In Critical Care, our Registered Nurses (RNs) are highly skilled and trained; helping to provide expertise at the bedside and the highest quality care in the most compassionate way. The units heavily rely on a team-based mentality in which all healthcare team members work congruently to achieve the best outcomes based on the Hartford Healthcare values of Safety, Excellence, Integrity and Caring. Current Connecticut RN License. Graduate of an accredited nursing school (BSN Required). BLS certification by the American Heart Association required prior to date of hire. Minimum one year acute care Registered Nurse experience strongly preferred. In exceptional circumstances, experienced RNs with an ADN/ASN who are currently in pursuit of a BSN or MSN may be considered. The Float Pool at Hartford Hospital, also known as the STAR Team, is comprised of experienced, highly skilled Nursing professionals. Registered Nurses on the STAR Team have a variety of skills, allowing them to transition from one specialty to another with confidence and ease. Our team is broken down into two groups, Med/Surg and Critical Care. The Med/Surg team floats between approximately 18 units (including the Step Down units) while our Critical Care RNs primarily float between the six ICUs at Hartford Hospital (MICU, SICU, Cardiac ICU, Neuro ICU and Cardiothoracic ICU). Our RNs rely on extensive nursing skills, strong communication and collaboration skills to assimilate seamlessly into different units and provide the highest levels of personalized, compassionate care to our patients. Minimum 2 yrs recent Acute Care RN experience. Critical Care experience preferred. Current Connecticut RN License required prior to start date. To foster the growth of each new RN to the department, a unique mentorship program has been developed to support the transition into our department during each RN’s first year here. Our mentorship program includes experienced nurses who offer their time to all of our newest team members. Through the mentorship program, we’ve successfully created professional colleague relationships that contribute to each RN’s individual success within our department. In addition to being one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Connecticut, HHED is also an accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, chest pain center and comprehensive stroke center, treating patients of the highest acuity in the region. Comprised of 109 beds, with the addition of a new 19 bed ED Observation Unit, HHED treats an average of 109,000 patients annually. Our nurses are renowned for thinking and acting quickly to meet the varying needs of our patients, as well as being highly skilled, flexible and resilient; with the ability to work in a team environment to provide the highest level of satisfaction to our staff and our patients. Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. BSN degree required; ASN/ADN RNs with relevant experience may be considered.
