Speechwriter - Federal PR

DCG Communications (DCG) is seeking aSpeechwriterto play a crucial role in shaping the public image of our DHS client and communicating its key messages effectively to diverse audiences. The position requires a combination of writing prowess, political acumen, and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment. In this role, the selected candidate will draft and edit speeches, articles, informational reports and publications, news releases, briefings, talking points, PowerPoint presentations, informational publications and briefing documents, web and social media content, and other written materials to ensure they accurately reflect and effectively communicate the programs and objectives of the agency and its leadership. Responsibilities:

Work with client to ensure speeches are timely, compelling, and precise.

Draft speeches, testimony, remarks, and talking points to establish and maintain mutual communication between client leadership, monitoring the public, stakeholders, and Members of Congress

Translate complex issues into plain language to make them easily understandable for a variety of audiences

Coordinate with speaker and executive leadership to deliver speeches on-time and in proper format appropriate for use

Write, review, and edit letters, press releases and op-eds appropriate for the intended audiences

Meet and work withtechnical staff to better understand, clarify and assist them in communicating their programs effectively to the media and the public; create draft written materials to communicate agency programs and initiatives effectively to public audiences

Required expertise:

Excellent Writing Skills: Proficiency in writing clear, compelling, and persuasive prose suitable for public speaking.

Research and Analysis: Conducting thorough research on relevant topics, policies, and issues to ensure accuracy and credibility of content.

Audience Analysis: Understanding the audience demographics and preferences to tailor speeches effectively.

Political Awareness: Understanding of government policies, political dynamics, and agency missions. Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Coordination: Working closely with other communication professionals, such as press secretaries, public affairs officers, and policy advisors, to align messaging and ensure consistency.

Editing and Prooing: Ensuring all written materials are clear, concise, and adhere to agency guidelines and standards.

Deadline Management: Managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines.

Speech Delivery Support: Occasionally assisting with rehearsals and providing guidance on delivery techniques to speakers.

Education and Experience : A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field is required. Previous experience in speechwriting, public relations, or government communications is preferred.
