This essential role involves the safe and efficient pick-up and delivery of intermodal containers between customer locations, ocean ports, and rail heads, covering local, regional, or national routes. The ideal candidate will communicate effectively with dispatch to report any factors impacting delivery schedules, such as delays or mechanical issues. With an average annual pay of $107,000 and access to OD’s Tuition Reimbursement Program for recent trucking school graduates, this position offers a rewarding career path. Join us in driving excellence and reliability in the transportation industry.Job SummaryContainer Drayage Drivers (CDDs) will pick up and deliver intermodal containers to and from customer locations and to and from ocean ports and rail heads. This can be within a local, regional, or national area. Communicate with dispatch or their managers any issues which would affect a delivery schedule. This would include but not be limited to port/rail delays, traffic delays, mechanical failures, driver errors, etc.Primary Responsibilities

Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations that govern safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and transportation of hazardous materials.

Follow instructions as identified by dispatch or their managers and supplied documentation.

Deliver containers in a safe, time efficient, and effective and manner.

Operate tablets/phones and any other computer/internal freight monitoring systems required.

Job Qualifications

Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with hazmat, tanker and doubles endorsements.

Might be required to acquire Transportation Worker’s Identification Card (TWIC).

Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Must have 12 months previous tractor trailer driving experience and/or be a graduate of a State Certified and Licensed truck driving school, acceptable to Old Dominion and/or have satisfactorily completed the Old Dominion truck driver training program (ODTDT 8/88)

Must have the ability to properly operate hand held tablets when required.

Must have working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.

Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, and extended periods, of time.

Meet or exceed the medic al standards of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation and satisfactorily pass a drug test and alcohol test.

Must be available for around-the-clock trips to accommodate freight movements and must be able to be away from home for extended periods of time.

Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the US Department of Transportation.

Must satisfactorily pass a drug test.

Must satisfactorily pass an alcohol test (if applicable)

Must satisfactorily pass the orientation/training program instructions by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer.

Must be at least 22 years of age.

Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

(Sitting) Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours.

(Standing/Walking) Must be able to spend at least 25% of the day standing and 25% of the day walking on surfaced such as concrete, wood and metal and sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces.

(Bending/Stooping) Must be able to perform occasional crouching to handle and position freight when required, and conduct pre-trip inspections.

(Climbing) Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle's cab. Cab floor level is generally 36 to 66 inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and hand holds; also requires occasional bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching and balancing.

(Moving Materials) May be occasionally required to perform pushing, pulling, or carrying of freight.

(Reaching) Must be able to reach waist level and below waist level for maneuvering and directing the controls to operate the truck.

(Other) Must be able to install and remove tire chains when required due to inclement weather. Must be able to hook/unhook various commercial vehicle combinations, manually lower and raise landing gear, operate the fifth wheel release lever, lock and release pintle-hooks, attach and release safety chains, open and close cargo doors, climb into and out of vehicles, fuel vehicles and check engine oil and coolant level, secure cargo containers, etc.

Must be able to use right, left or both hands to get in and out of truck, using the steering wheel, buttons, securing cargo containers, etc.

Must be able to grip with right, left or both hands to use handles to get in and out of the truck, holding tablet, holding the steering wheel, etc.

Must be able to pinch fingers on the right, left or both hands to utilize clip boards, utilize tablets, etc.

Must be able to use cognitive skills for:

paying attention to surroundings, including traffic, truck inspections, freight, gates, etc.

long-term and short-term memory for inspecting areas, driving in traffic and for safety

logic and reasoning in reading manifests, tablets, navigation, road signs, reading boxes and order numbers

Auditory and visual processing to inspect trucks, driving, reading, listening for horns and/or other traffic and speaking with customers

Must be able to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals.

Must satisfactorily pass any physical testing requirements which is consistent with the job requirements discussed above.

Must be able to read, write and speak English.

Attendance is a requirement.
