Position: Criminal InvestigatorOpening Date: January 1, 2025 Closing Date: Until FilledSalary: $67,252Department: Public Defender Location: Courthouse OneFLSA Status: Non-exemptDescription:This full-time position requires a person willing to play a crucial role in supporting the St. Joseph County Public Defense Team by gathering and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting attorneys as the resolve cases and prepare for trial.Essential functions:Conducting Investigations: Gather evidence from crime scenes, witnesses, police reports, cell phone and computer records, and forensic lab reportsInterviewing: Interview witnesses, defendants, law enforcement personnel, and victims to gather informationDocumenting: Write detailed reports of interviews, investigations, and findingsCollaborating: Work closely with attorneys, judges, and law enforcement to maintain up-to-date case informationTestifying: Provide testimony when needed during trials regarding evidence and investigation proceduresLocating Individuals: Use public databases and other sources to locate suspects or witnessesQualifications:Education: A bachelor's degree (or equivalent in experience and training) in law enforcement, criminal justice, forensic science, pre-law, or a related field.Experience: At least one year of relevant experience in a courtroom, law office, police department, or criminal investigative workSkills: Excellent interpersonal communication, attention to detail, organizational skills, and a thorough knowledge of court and jurisdiction-related lawBackground Check: Must pass a criminal background investigation
